Guide to regulation of inbound investment in Australia
The data in this article was updated on 20 January 2026 Introduction This publication outlines some of the more important regulatory requirements for a foreign person investing in Australia. Investments in Australia by foreign persons must be notified to the Foreign Investments Review Board (FIRB) where the proposal meets the relevant thresholds or is a notifiable national security action. Who is a ‘foreign person’?
Federal Budget 2025-2026: FIRB snapshot
Foreign home buyers lose out, as the Federal Budget announcements confirm two-year acquisitions ban, while vacant land acquired for development will face greater scrutiny. While the two-year ban on foreign persons acquiring established dwellings will grab the headlines, the reality is that what is being targeted is a relatively small number of acquisitions.
Australia imposes temporary ban on foreign purchases of established dwellings and cracks down on land banking
On 16 February 2025, the Australian Government announced significant changes to its foreign investment regulations, including a temporary ban on foreign purchases of established dwellings for at least two years. These measures are aimed at addressing the housing affordability crisis and boosting housing supply, while also tackling land banking, which has been a significant barrier to housing development.

By Conrad Smith The Foreign Investment Review Board (FIRB) has released an update to the Foreign Investment Policy, outlining several planned reforms to Australia’s foreign investment review regime aimed at addressing the intensifying geopolitical competition and growing risk to Australia’s national interest from foreign investments.

A24 Spotlight: Good Time
Good Time is hard-bitten pulp set inside a pitiless New York miasma. It’s raw. It’s cynical. It, most of all, is relentless. With Good Time, directing brothers Benny and Josh Safdie have given us a heist film for the ages, a ‘70s crime flick updated for the 2010s.
A24 Films
A24 Films make independent films that break all the rules of cinema. We showcase, analyse, review and delve into their catalog of work.
Letter: Scrutiny needed for cellphone data
I consider myself a fairly understanding individual, but when I read “Chamber analysis of cellphone data gets $50,000 from Grand Forks,” I was perplexed. Here we have an article with quotes from our leaders of various civic areas, stating that it is good that Grand Forks is going to utilize location data from cellular phones to improve economic factors for local businesses.
Letter: Rolling the dice at chaotic intersection
By Conrad Smith, Grand Forks Today at 6:15 a.m. There is a place on the streets of Grand Forks that is kind of like a casino, in that you are always rolling the dice to see just how long you will be at the intersection for. This is at Demers Avenue and North 42nd Street. An ultra-busy intersection, that is now increasingly unpassable for up to half an hour or more due to train activity.
Letter: Shame on Herald for printing letter
All Americans are, of course, entitled to their viewpoint on issues, even if others do not agree with that viewpoint. However, the ranting that is strewn throughout the letter is disturbing and shows an air of not considering both sides of an issue, which alone should be enough to not deserve printing.
Viewpoint: Pothole-riddled streets unacceptable
Has anyone else driven down South Washington Street, Cherry Street, University Avenue, or any other myriad of roads in Grand Forks that are in almost impassable condition?
Connect Procurement’s “S-Curve” to that of the Business
Spend Matters welcomes this guest post from Conrad Smith, senior director of global procurement at Adobe. Every procurement department needs to “right-size” itself. Although it’s natural to set our vision on a “world-class” procurement department, it’s far more important to clearly understand the stage and needs of the business we support. From startup through growth and into stabilization, the business needs us to deliver value and support directly aligned with its key business goals.
Rights to sue up for grabs, who wants them?
The world of insolvency is currently undergoing serious review, with potential reforms flying around thick and fast. But talk of safe harbours and unenforceable ipso facto clauses (see our update here) have overshadowed a significant development that commenced on 1 March 2017: the ability for external administrators1 to now assign their rights to sue under the Corporations Act 2001 (Cth) (Corporations Act).
The hiring conundrum
Conrad Smith, senior director of global procurement at Adobe, looks at the questions procurement chiefs ask themselves when a key member of the team leaves There comes a time in every manager’s career when even their most dependable employee moves on. This can happen for any number of reasons and it’s always tough to find the right replacement. I oversee Adobe’s global procurement department and we recently had a valued employee retire.
How Prospect Theory Can Transform Your Executive Conversations
All of you road warriors have lived through this. I was in the airport terminal last week getting ready to board my flight home, when an announcement came from the customer service desk: The flight was overbooked. The airline was looking for a volunteer to give up their seat and take a later flight home, in exchange for a $500 voucher they could apply to their next trip.
Letter: 'None of the Above' option belongs on ballot
None of the Above. That's right, folks. Yes, there are multiple parties listed on the ballot in our "two-party" system. You can easily view the North Dakota ballot online, and see that there are six candidates for president listed. Under those is the most important selection: a blank line. Now, I'm not sure what happens if enough people fill in the little oval next to the blank line and put "None of the Above" in that spot.
LETTER: Bjerke wages war against much that is good about Grand Forks
Let's talk property taxes. My property taxes in Grand Forks have dropped over the past five years, as have the property taxes of everyone else I know.Perhaps it's Grand Forks City Council member Terry Bjerke who lives in a magical spot of Grand Forks, one with "rainbows" and "unicorns" and where the residential property taxes have increased over those years.I happen to like Grand Forks, and I work at UND, so I probably over-react when I hear sarcastic statements from Bjerke such as,...
