MADISON, Wis. — Shabazz students are learning woodworking, problem-solving and design skills by building a boat through a hands-on class connected to rocks, rivers and ropes. At first, some students said the assignment was confusing. “What do you mean, you’re making a boat for a class about rocks, rivers and ropes?” a student said. “You’re not just making the boat.” The class has included outdoor experiences, including a recent rock-climbing trip to Devil’s Lake State Park.

JANESVILLE, Wis.— Washington Elementary School in Janesville will be closed for the upcoming school year after flooding caused the school to close in April. School officials said district officials have spent the past month collaborating with vendors to secure pricing and timelines for critical structural repairs. Recent updates reveal that the necessary custom switchgear required to restore electrical power to Washington Elementary will not arrive until April – July 2027.

Arrest made in fatal pedestrian crash near Breese Stevens Field

MADISON, Wis.— An arrest was made in a fatal crash that killed a pedestrian near Breese Stevens Field on Wednesday. A 43-year-old man was booked into the Dane County Jail on Thursday afternoon on a charge of first-degree reckless homicide. Investigators determined that excessive speed was a major factor in this crash. Results from a blood draw are pending. Police said a man in his 70s was in the crosswalk, with the right of way, when he was struck and killed.
