Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

Freelancing for anyone that would take me on.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

The last time I typed on a typewriter was in junior high where we were first learning the art of typing.

How is social media changing news?

Makes it more interactive.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Not sure actually. I don't gravitate to personalities as much as most people do it seems.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

It means the possibility of getting to inspire others, shape the minds of the world, and hopefully leave it better than found.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Email is sufficient...but I'm not opposed to talking to someone either.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

I write in Google Docs and wouldn't survive without the Google platform, but also use Grammarly to double-check my work.

What's your favorite social network?

Currently Instagram

Who do you wish followed you?

Professional Disc Golf players and perhaps someone like Cesar Millan. Any pro rock climber and mountain biker would be great too!

Why did you become a journalist?

To seek out new things, to boldly go where no one has gone before...and to find space for my thoughts, opinions, and ramblings of this world.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

The next one I publish!

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Don't fit in a box. I used to think being a "jack-of-all" trade was a curse, but now I see it as a strength.

When's the best time to pitch you?

Really anytime is ok, but that morning coffee rush is when I'm most creative and open to new ideas.

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

For my disc golf site, I sometimes get pitched topics about traditional ball golf. Those irk me.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

On a mountain.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

Business Insider
