Broad Institute, Boston Children’s Hospital, and The Jackson Laboratory today announced the Center for Therapeutic Genetics (CTG), a collaboration that will develop genetic medicines and treat patients for rare disease not as one-off breakthroughs but as a repeatable practice, and share the methods, data, and training so others can do the same. An estimated 350–400 million people worldwide live with one of approximately 8,000 rare diseases.

Broad-led consortium receives ARPA-H award to advance gene editing for rare pediatric epilepsy

A consortium of 12 organizations, led by the Broad Institute, has been selected to receive funding from the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H) under its THRIVE program. The award, for up to $34.5 million, will fund the Pediatric Epilepsies and Rare CNS (PERC) Gene Editing Platform — a collaboration of academic researchers, clinicians, patient advocates, and biotechnology companies aiming to develop gene-editing treatments for children with rare forms of epilepsy.

2026 Merkin Prize in Biomedical Technology awarded to pioneers of the modern cochlear implant

Five scientists and engineers — Graeme Clark, Erwin Hochmair, Ingeborg Hochmair, Michael Merzenich, and Blake Wilson — have been jointly awarded the 2026 Richard N. Merkin Prize in Biomedical Technology for developing the modern cochlear implant, the first medical device to interface with the nervous system to provide a sense of hearing. More than a million deaf or nearly deaf people worldwide use cochlear implants to access sound and spoken language.
