Parents of Sault stabbing victim speak of heartbreak, trauma

A Sault Ste. Marie fatal stabbing case was back in court on Thursday, more than 5 1/2 years after the incident took place. Montana Lewis was found guilty in February of manslaughter in the 2020 stabbing death of Samuel Graham Jr., who was 19 years old when he was killed. At a hearing June 11, the court heard that 47 victim impact statements were filed from family members and friends of the deceased, with 26 read aloud in court.

‘My own people’: Hockey North Hall of Fame inducts first class Original

A casual affair in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., on Thursday night honoured some hardcore hockey contributors from across northeastern Ontario, as the first-ever Hockey North Hall of Fame recognized 30 northerners for their roles in the game. The induction ceremony was meant to highlight those who are not always front and centre for recognition but play big parts in regional and community hockey scenes – all the way back to 1975.

Sault women fleeing abuse get new housing law help

Women fleeing abuse in the Sault area have gained another resource to help them reach a better tomorrow. A new partnership will bring legal experts specializing in housing rights to the Women in Crisis Algoma’s Community Connection Centre. A celebratory event marked the beginning of the new ‘Trauma-Informed Housing Law Partnership’ this week. On the second Wednesday of each month, the Algoma Community Legal Clinic will now host a Women’s Housing Rights Clinic at the connection centre on Bay Street.
