Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

I received my first paid work for a couple of pieces for CBC (music and arts sites).

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Not in any substantial way, for the purpose of drafting a significant work.

How is social media changing news?

I would argue that we are using social media in a way that generally encourages skimming and discourages pause.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

Being a journalist means endeavouring to bring substance, critical thinking, and elevated standards to public discourse.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

I like to draft in Ulysses. I use Evernote for clippings / research. I record phone interviews with TapeACall Pro and Twitter/RSS for news.

What's your favorite social network?

None are my favourite, but the visual storytelling, concision, and relative lack of vitriol on Instagram are nicer than not.

What's your favorite drink?

A two shots of espresso made from an Aeropress, with water at 205 degrees Fahrenheit.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

On my bike.
