Cynthia Abrams covers Metro for Nashville Public Radio. She grew up in Eugene and Portland, Oregon and moved east after graduating from Whitman College. Cindy comes to Nashville from central Virginia, where she covered the courts at Rappahannock News. She was WPLN’s digital news intern in 2021 before joining the station full-time as a newscast and digital producer last year. She started covering the Metro government in the fall of 2023.

Parton, who grew up in extreme poverty in East Tennessee, has spent decades donating millions to charitable causes that range from early education to healthcare. In 1988, Parton launched the Dollywood Foundation in Sevier County, Tenn., her home county, with the goal of improving the high school graduation rate.

No right on red? Pedestrian deaths have Nashville pursuing intersection safety measure

A Metro Council bill currently under consideration would ban right turns on red lights downtown, in school zones and at certain intersections. In recent years, Nashville has only gotten more dangerous for pedestrians. So far this year, 21 people have died while walking. In an attempt to make streets safer for pedestrians, city leaders are considering restricting where drivers are allowed to turn right on a red light.
