@nytimes But also striking: the way compassion has ceased to be our global default. Not just Australia, but in many places. The men in Manus are confused about that. As am I. Partisanship aside, was the world once more generous with foreigners in need? Or are the needs greater? 7/

#Auspol does not seem to be grappling with this as much as our @nytimes Australia readers, as far as I can see. Thoughtful citizens once again seem to be ahead of the politics. Even some who support the policy are asking smart questions. 6/
