What researchers suspect may be fueling cancer among millennials
ST. LOUIS - Gary Patti leaned in to study the rows of plastic tanks, where dozens of translucent zebrafish flickered through chemically treated water. Each tank contained a different substance - some notorious, others less well understood - all known or suspected carcinogens. Patti’s team is watching them closely, tracking which fish develop tumors, to try to find clues to one of the most unsettling medical puzzles of our time: Why are so many young people getting cancer?

What researchers suspect may be fueling cancer among millennials
For many years, research into the origins of cancer largely centered on two main factors: genetics and specific lifestyle choices such as smoking and heavy alcohol use. But only a small fraction of cancers can be explained by inherited genetic mutations. Today, scientists are scrutinizingthe much broader set of environmental exposures people encounter over their lifetime. September 23, 2025 ST.

Since The Pandemic, I Rewired My Brain. Here’s How.
In the beginning of Lockdown, we were all on Zoom. You remember. We were having social gatherings on Zoom, working on Zoom, connecting with our families, watching actors read the scripts of old movies, listening to musicians perform, taking part in fundraisers. In April of 2020, I got an email from my high school, a boarding school in Connecticut. It offered a Zoom philosophy course, taught by its senior teacher. Immediately I was in. We’ve been doing it since and it has rewired my brain.
Want to be great at AI? Take a Philosophy Course
In my years of teaching AI to MBA, Masters students, and postgrads, one thing has become clear to me: if you want to be great at AI, you should spend some time on philosophy. AI and philosophy use the same muscle. They have the same foundational basis in questions, in curiosity. I don’t mean you should walk around quoting philosophers in 2025. That person is annoying. Nobody needs you to say in a meeting, ‘this reminds me of what Kierkegaard said…’ Do not do this.
He’s dying. She’s pregnant. His one last wish is to fight his cancer long enough to see his baby.
PROVO, Utah — The baby shower was a mash-up of imaginary worlds: the Mad Hatter’s tea party, Neverland, Tatooine. Tanner Martin, the dad-to-be, sat off to the side, a sherpa blanket across his lap, a whip of plastic tubing around his face tethered to an oxygen tank. As he looked around the room filled with young parents and children, his greatest wish was that he would live long enough to meet his own daughter. He smiled as a friend walked in, with a toddler cradled against his chest.

Trump promised scientific breakthroughs. Researchers say he’s breaking science.
In his presidential campaign last year, Donald Trump vowed to supercharge U.S. scientific research efforts, pledging to “unleash the power of American innovation” to combat cancer, Alzheimer’s and other diseases. But Trump has instead unleashed cuts and chaos that are paralyzing ongoing research, prompting layoffs and threatening America’s perch as a global scientific leader, researchers and scientists warn.

Elon Musk’s business empire is built on $38 billion in government funding
|
Elon Musk and his cost-cutting U.S. DOGE Service team have been on a mission to trim government largesse. Yet Musk is one of the greatest beneficiaries of the taxpayers’ coffers. Over the years, Musk and his businesses have received at least $38 billion in government contracts, loans, subsidies and tax credits, often at critical moments, a Washington Post analysis has found, helping seed the growth that has made him the world’s richest person. The payments stretch back more than 20 years.

A Connecticut town that swung toward Trump offers clues for Democrats
Waterbury, Conn. - Eight years ago, Tomas Olivo’s biggest disappointment with Democrats was that he could not cast a ballot for Sen. Bernie Sanders for president, as the party nominated Hillary Clinton instead. But recently, Olivo’s list of gripes with the party has grown, particularly when he pays his property taxes, fills his gas tank or winces at his receipt during what are now solo trips to the grocery store. “We used to make it like a family trip.

The counties that picked the winning president every year since 2000
And then there were two. Trivia question: What U.S. counties have voted for the winning presidential candidate every election this century? For our purposes, we are using the loose public interpretation of “this century” that would include the 2000 election, even though we know from a cosmic perspective that centuries begin counting with 1. Anyway, since 2000, what counties have voted in favor of the winning presidential candidate every time? How did we get here?

What the 2024 election tells us about Trump’s voters
A key question heading into the 2024 election was whether Donald Trump could expand his base. The answer: Yes. On Tuesday, Trump made inroads with Hispanic voters, younger voters and voters without a college degree. At the same time, more than 80 percent of Trump’s voters are still White men and women. The Washington Post analyzed exit polling data since the 2000 presidential election to better understand how support for Republicans has changed among key voting demographics.

Across the country, fentanyl has largely fueled a more than doubling of overdose deaths among children ages 12 to 17 since the start of the pandemic, according to a Washington Post analysis of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data released this month.
