When a deal was finally reached with the union in October 1966, the minimum weekly salary for performers on WOR-FM was $175 — less than half that of their counterparts at WOR-AM.1 WOR-FM’s second “debut” also occurred on a Saturday, exactly two months and eight days after the first. The event was heralded, very modestly, by a short story headlined, “Jockey’s Finally Catch Up with WOR-FM’s Disks,” on page 87 of the previous Friday’s New York Times.

What was your first job as a journalist?

I started out as a "rock journalist" in college -- music is still a first love -- and then got a job as a "messenger" at The New Yorker.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes. Yes I have.

How is social media changing news?

Obviously it has quickened the pace and requires us to "break" breaking news faster.

2024 - Online Business Writing First Place

I received the first place award in the online business writing category from the DC SPJ for a story on the growing cannabis business sector in Washington, DC. The story was entitled “Businessman Strives to Bring Luxury to DC’s Once-Stigmatized Cannabis Sector.” I was also a finalist in the same category for a second story, “Can AM Radio Be Saved? Should It Be?” The story focused on legislation intended to keep AM radios in new model cars.

2023 - Online Breaking News

I proudly shared this award with my two summer interns, Natalie McCormick and Eden Metzger, for the story “Abortion ruling a galvanizing moment in American life.” The story was on the Supreme Court's landmark ruling in Dobbs v Jackson Women's Health, which overturn the court's earlier landmark ruling on abortion, Roe v Wade.

I won the first place online features award for “When swing was king at the embassy,” a story that recounted Ahmet Münir Ertegün and his older brother Nesühi presented jazz concerts as teens in the 1940s at the Turkish embassy in Washington, DC when their father was ambassador to the US.
