What was your first job as a journalist?
Night radio writer for United Press International in Albany, NY.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Many of them. I have four in my office right now. A Teletype, too.
How is social media changing news?
Ultimate disintermediation. It makes primary sources available to everyone, with all the pluses and minuses that entails.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
Danny Concannon. Second place: Carl Kolchak. Third place: Aaron Altman. Fourth: Miranda Priestly.
What does it mean to be a journalist?
People don't like journalists. Being a good one means staying in the background, listening, and asking only honest questions.
What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?
Can't think of a one.
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
Know what I care about. Be straight. Take No for an answer.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
I'm a master Googler. MacBook Pro with as much bandwidth as I can afford. iPhone. Evernote. Facebook. LinkedIn Premium; it's worth the money.
What's your favorite social network?
Facebook for personal stuff. LinkedIn for professional.
Who do you wish followed you?
Everyone.
Why did you become a journalist?
I loved being in the center of the action and the first to know. Still do.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
Photo editor. Occasional "humor" writer, which usually got me into trouble.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
The rise of the commercial Internet. Anticipating a changed world when a billion or more people get connected.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Write, and promote your writing. Don't wait for some outside agency or employer to give you a platform; do it yourself.

Late morning.
