Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

My first paying job was for a paper called The Villages Daily Sun in central Florida. My first gig was with my college newspaper.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

I honestly can't think of one. My favorite journalists are all real people.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Most of my work involves a notebook, a pen, a car, and a good pair of shoes. I write stories in a program called DTI.

What's your favorite social network?

Probably Facebook, though I use Twitter quite a bit for work purposes.

Who do you wish followed you?

Everyone.

Why did you become a journalist?

I've always been a storyteller. Journalism allows me to make a living telling stories.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

No, but i was a writer and editor for my college newspaper, The Minaret, at the University of Tampa.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

My story about Gary Alvord, who was America's longest-serving death row inmate, is a personal favorite.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Read a lot. Study the work of other journalists. Become well acquainted with public records. Listen to people, even if they're boring.

When's the best time to pitch you?

Anytime.
