Dan Sullivan covers crime and public safety in Hillsborough County, Florida, for the Tampa Bay Times. Prior to joining the Times in 2010, he worked as a reporter for The Villages Daily Sun (The Villages, Fla.) and The Daily News-Transcript (Norwood, Mass.). He is a 2006 graduate of the University of Tampa, where he earned a degree in writing with a focus in journalism.

Billy Adams III murdered Alana Sims in cold blood and caused the death of her unborn child, a jury decided Tuesday. The panel of six women and six men deliberated for five hours before finding the Tampa rapper guilty of first-degree murder in Sims' death. The jury also convicted him of killing her baby. Adams, 28, sat with a hand over his mouth as the verdict was read aloud in court, but showed no reaction. In the courtroom gallery, members of his family began to weep.

What was your first job as a journalist?

My first paying job was for a paper called The Villages Daily Sun in central Florida. My first gig was with my college newspaper.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

I honestly can't think of one. My favorite journalists are all real people.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Most of my work involves a notebook, a pen, a car, and a good pair of shoes. I write stories in a program called DTI.
