Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

I wrote for WardsAuto as their New York reporter, contributing to five magazines and newsletters.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Email is best. But I don't do corporate product or profile pieces.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

My favorite is a browser extension called TabsFolders. It allows me to save and organize web pages for research.

Why did you become a journalist?

I'm a storyteller. I enjoy talking to people and learning their stories and issues.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

The most recent story I'm proud of is my piece on the environmental impacts of the Kilauea eruption, which nobody had been looking at.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

Outside. Hiking, photographing, walking, traveling, being in the world.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

I read daily newspapers, science journals, environmental publications, and regional news.
