Real Salt Lake rallies for 2-2 draw against LAFC
SANDY, Utah (ABC4 Sports) – Real Salt Lake remains winless in MLS play since May, but the team rallied in the second half to salvage a draw against LAFC Saturday night at America First Field. Noel Caliskan scored a tying goal on a rebound in the 75th minute, and DeAndre Yedlin made a sliding clearance in the 87th to preserve Real Salt Lake’s 2-2 draw with LAFC on Saturday night.
#14 BYU cruises past Utah Tech, 63-7
PROVO, Utah (ABC4 Sports) – BYU did what it needed to do in it’s season opener. The Cougars crushed Utah Tech, 63-7, as freshman Legend Glasker scored three first half touchdowns. Bear Bachmeier threw for 198 yards and three touchdowns – all before halftime – to lead No. 14 BYU to a 63-7 victory over Utah Tech on Saturday night. Glasker caught two touchdown passes and ran for a third score in his collegiate debut. Glasker finished with a team-high 65 receiving yards on three catches.

The Utes are coming off a 10-2 season, but are starting a new era with new head coach Morgan Scalley. Scalley took over for Kyle Whittingham, who left for the head coaching job at Michigan in December.

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4 Sports) – What a home debut it was for Morgan Scalley. The new Utes head football coach led his team to a dominating 66-14 blowout win in his first game as head coach at Rice-Eccles Stadium Thursday night. Devon Dampier completed 13 of 18 passes for 176 yards and three touchdowns, all in the first half, while Wayshawn Parker had 94 total yards and three first half touchdowns as the 21st-ranked Utes rolled to victory.

Jazz trade Cody Williams, get Josh Green from Minnesota
SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4 Sports) – The Utah Jazz have traded away another first round draft pick. Late Friday night, the Jazz sent 2024 first rounder Cody Williams to the Minnesota Timberwolves along with guard John Konchar, in exchange for veteran guard Josh Green and cash. ESPN’s Shams Charania was first to report the deal. The Minnesota Timberwolves are trading Josh Green and cash to the Utah Jazz for Cody Williams and John Konchar, sources tell ESPN.

RSL eliminated from Leagues Cup with 3-0 loss
COMMERCE CITY, Col. (ABC4 Sports) – Real Salt Lake’s run in the Leagues Cup has come to an end. Club Lèon dominated RSL in the quarterfinals, as Diber Cambindo scored two goals in a 3-0 victory in front of a sparse crowd at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Colorado. The match would have been played at America First Field Sandy, but a Noah Kahan concert had been scheduled several months ago.

SANDY, Utah (ABC4 Sports) - After losing All-Star Zavier Gozo to Crystal Palace of the English Premier League, Real Salt Lake made sure to sign another young rising star to a contract extension. Leading scorer Sergi Solans signed an extension with RSL that will keep him with the club through the 2029-30 season with a team option for 2030-31. Originally signing with the club in January, the 23-year-old has enjoyed a breakout rookie season with RSL.

LOGAN, Utah (ABC4 Sports) – Former Fremont High and BYU star Dallin Hall has announced he will play his final season of college basketball at Utah State. Hall, who played last year at Virginia, made the announcement on Instagram Saturday afternoon. Hall was a major part of the BYU team right away coming out of Fremont High. The point guard played in 100 games in his first three seasons with the Cougars, averaging 7.7 points and 4.2 assists per game.

Utah files lawsuit against Freddie Whittingham
SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4 Sports) – The University of Utah is suing former assistant Freddie Whittingham for breach of contract after he left the Utes to join the coaching staff of his brother, Kyle Whittingham, at Michigan. University attorneys filed a lawsuit on Aug. 3 in Utah’s Third District Court, alleging that Freddie Whittingham “abandoned” his role as Utah’s tight ends coach, despite being under contract through January 2027, to take the tight ends job at Michigan.
RSL loses scoring fest to FC Dallas, 4-3
SANDY, Utah (ABC4 Sports) – Playing its sixth game in 19 days, Real Salt Lake ran out of gas Wednesday night at America First Field. Petar Musa scored two goals to increase his league-leading total to 16, and rookie Ran Binyamin scored the winner in second-half stoppage time with his first goal to propel FC Dallas to a 4-3 victory over Real Salt Lake on Wednesday night. RSL remains winless in MLS play since the World Cup break.

The transfer of the 19-year-old West Valley City native became official Tuesday as Gozo joins Crystal Palace of the EPL, the top soccer league in the world. SANDY, Utah (ABC4 Sports) – Real Salt Lake needs to save some of this for MLS play. For the second time in four nights, RSL dominated a Liga MX team at home, shutting out FC Juarez Tuesday night, 3-0. This comes after a 4-0 win over Atlante FC on Saturday. The question now is will it be enough to advance to the Leagues Cup quarterfinals? RSL earned seven points in their three pool play games, including a shootout loss to Tigres UANL last week.

LJ Martin poised for record-breaking season at BYU
PROVO, Utah (ABC4 Sports) – One of the big reasons why BYU is ranked 15th in the preseason poll and expected to contend for the Big 12 Championship is the return of running back LJ Martin. Martin rushed for over 1,305 yards and 12 touchdowns last season, but he could have had more. He opted out of the Pop Tarts Bowl to have shoulder surgery, and after considering entering the NFL Draft, Martin decided to return to BYU fully healthy.
McCae Hillstead re-takes the reigns at Utah State
LOGAN, Utah (ABC4 Sports) – A familiar face will lead the Utah State football team this fall. McCae Hillstead earned the starting quarterback job in spring practice after transferring back to the Aggies this fall. “Definitely a different track, returning back to a school I was originally at,” Hillstead said. Hillstead played in eight games and started four as a freshman at Utah State before transferring to BYU and spending two seasons in Provo.
