Falling Through the Cracks: Why Veteran Suicide Data Deserves Scrutiny
The opinions expressed in this op-ed are those of the authors and do not necessarily reflect the views of Military.com. If you would like to submit your own commentary, please send your article to opinions@military.com for consideration. This year as we honor those who have put on the uniform on Veterans Day, we must take the time to remember that, for many, their unwavering commitment and dedication to our democracy has come at a cost.
Opinion: Local franchises a perfect fit for separating service members
With more than 700,000 veterans living in Virginia, our great commonwealth must recognize and give back to those who bravely have served our country. According to the Pew Research Center, only 1 in 4 U.S. veterans have a job lined up after leaving the military. As a nation, we can do better, and one way is through the opportunities offered by local franchise businesses, which provide our nation’s heroes with the support they need when transitioning from military to civilian life.

Celebrating the service of Virginia's women veterans
Women have served in every conflict since the beginning of our nation. Since World War I, Vietnam, Korea, Iraq, Afghanistan and today's global war on terrorism, the achievements they have made and their numbers in service have increased dramatically. Today, women make up nearly 15 percent of the total active and reserve forces of our Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, Space Force, National Guard and Reserves.

The Disability Ratings Game
They knew the bombs were there. Earlier in the day, a raid camera had filmed four suspected Taliban fighters sitting in a trench beside a cemetery. In the footage, one of the combatants walked out into the open road and took a knee. After a few minutes, he returned to his position. Tyson Quink’s field artillery platoon had been trained on the enemy’s tactics. The Taliban had great patience. They liked to plant IEDs (improvised explosive devices) in the ground, then find cover nearby.
Our Veterans Need Help Becoming Civilians Again
As we pay tribute every November to those who serve and have served, I always think of Dennis Miller of La Salle, Michigan. Dennis gave the ultimate sacrifice during a firefight in Ramadi, Iraq, on November 10, 2004. His parents were notified of his death the next day—on Veterans Day. I was his company commander, bearing ultimate responsibility for his death. I was wounded but survived with minimal harm.
Abandoned
The opinions expressed by columnists are their own and do not necessarily represent the views of Townhall.com. Amid the chaos of the final US withdrawal from Afghanistan, commentators from across the political spectrum have lamented the abandonment of our Afghan allies, many of whom served critical roles in our military’s mission. Many have also reiterated the commitment to honor our veterans from the twenty-year Global War on Terror.
American republic in danger as power seeps out of Congress
ANALYSIS/OPINION: Editor’s note: This is the second in a series “To the Republic: Rediscovering the Constitution.” Click HERE to read the series. Before republics fall — from ancient Rome to modern America — their legislatures show signs of dysfunction. They avoid tackling the tough challenges facing their societies, defer to other branches of government, and fail in their basic obligation to represent the popular will.

On Purple Heart Day, How a Medal Rewards Acts of Love
The first time I was wounded, I bled little and required no serious treatment, but the soldier next to me, who bore the full brunt of the rocket-propelled grenade that struck our tank, was killed instantly. He volunteered—begged, in fact—to be on the mission that became his last because he loved his job, loved his fellow soldiers, and loved his country. His last act was preparing to fire his machine gun at an enemy position to protect our convoy. It was a final, fatal act of love.
Disability-based abortion is lethal discrimination
Prenatal care for women and their babies has advanced at a stunning rate in recent decades. We now routinely peek into the womb and see babies sucking their thumbs, smiling, hiccuping, and doing back flips. Tests have been developed which allow parents and their doctors to detect abnormalities and can prepare a couple with a potentially high-risk pregnancy for a baby with special needs.
