Direct observation of the Lindhard continuum using resonant inelastic X-ray scattering
Abstract Understanding the excitations of quantum materials is essential for unraveling how their microscopic constituents interact. Among these, particle-hole excitations form a particularly important class, as they govern fundamental processes such as screening, dissipation, and transport. In metals, the continuum of electron-hole excitations is described by the Lindhard function.
Collective Magnetic Excitations in a Photoexcited Electron-Doped Cuprate Superconductor
Elucidating the microscopic behavior of cuprates under ultrafast photoexcitation offers critical insights into their highly correlated out-of-equilibrium states. Although quasiparticle dynamics have been investigated extensively, the behavior of collective magnetic excitations remains comparatively unexplored.
PRC1 nanoglobules organize Hox chromatin during Drosophila embryogenesis
Abstract Polycomb group (PcG) proteins are required to maintain the silencing of key developmental genes during development. In Drosophila, they bind to discrete genomic elements named Polycomb response elements (PREs). PcG proteins form two classes of complexes. Polycomb repressive complex 2 (PRC2) deposits H3K27me3, a histone mark that covers large chromatin domains. The canonical PRC1 complex can bind to PREs as well as to the H3K27me3 mark.
Transient histone deacetylase inhibition induces cellular memory of gene expression and 3D genome folding - Nature Genetics
Abstract Epigenetic memory enables the propagation of gene expression patterns following transient stimuli. Although three-dimensional chromatin organization is emerging as a key regulator of genome function, it is unknown whether it contributes to cellular memory. Here we establish that acute perturbation of the epigenome can induce cellular memory of gene expression in mouse embryonic stem cells.
Orbital inversion and emergent lattice dynamics in infinite layer CaCoO2 - npj Quantum Materials
Abstract The layered cobaltate CaCoO2 exhibits a unique herringbone-like structure. Serving as a potential prototype for a new class of complex lattice patterns, we study the properties of CaCoO2 using X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS). Our results reveal a significant inter-plane hybridization between the Ca 4s- and Co 3d- orbitals, leading to an inversion of the textbook orbital occupation of a square planar geometry.

Time-Resolved X-Ray Spectroscopy from the Atomic Orbital Ground State Up
X-ray spectroscopy has been a key method to determine ground- and excited-state properties of quantum materials with atomic specificity. Now, new x-ray facilities are opening the door to the study of pump-probe x-ray spectroscopy—specifically, time-resolved x-ray absorption (trXAS) and time-resolved resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (trRIXS).
Transient histone deacetylase inhibition induces cellular memory of gene expression and three-dimensional genome folding
Abstract Epigenetic memory enables the stable propagation of gene expression patterns in response to transient developmental and environmental stimuli. Although three-dimensional (3D) organisation is emerging as a key regulator of genome function, it is unknown whether it contributes to cellular memory. Here, we establish that acute perturbation of the epigenome can induce cellular memory of gene expression in mouse embryonic stem cells (mESCs).

Transcription regulates the spatio-temporal dynamics of genes through micro-compartmentalization - Nature Communications
Abstract Although our understanding of the involvement of heterochromatin architectural factors in shaping nuclear organization is improving, there is still ongoing debate regarding the role of active genes in this process. In this study, we utilize publicly-available Micro-C data from mouse embryonic stem cells to investigate the relationship between gene transcription and 3D gene folding.

Biophysical ordering transitions underlie genome 3D re-organization during cricket spermiogenesis - Nature Communications
Abstract Spermiogenesis is a radical process of differentiation whereby sperm cells acquire a compact and specialized morphology to cope with the constraints of sexual reproduction while preserving their main cargo, an intact copy of the paternal genome. In animals, this often involves the replacement of most histones by sperm-specific nuclear basic proteins (SNBPs). Yet, how the SNBP-structured genome achieves compaction and accommodates shaping remain largely unknown.
Mobile blood depots in ground ambulances in compliance with French legislation: A feasibility study
Abstract Background Prehospital transfusion is a way of improving the management of hemorrhagic shock. In France, prehospital transfusion is struggling to develop, both because of logistical difficulties and particularly restrictive legislation. To comply with this, we propose to store the blood products (BPs) in ground ambulances with refrigerated boxes allowing remote continuous monitoring of storage conditions, called “NelumBox” (Tec4med Lifescience GmbH).

Don’t alter NCSU’s hallowed Brickyard. Protect it. | Opinion
North Carolina State University has designated the Brickyard as “a hallowed place.” It is such a beloved part of the campus that students regularly steal its bricks as souvenirs. The space is not just celebrated locally. It was featured on the cover of Landscape Architecture in 1970 and appeared in the magazine’s 100th anniversary issue in 2010. The Brickyard balances its open paving with softer, greener and more shady areas — and unlike many modernist piazzas, it attracted people. Lots of people.
Forward-Secure Encryption with Fast Forwarding
Paper 2022/1233 Forward-Secure Encryption with Fast Forwarding , New York University , New York University , New York University Abstract Forward-secure encryption (FSE) allows communicating parties to refresh their keys across epochs, in a way that compromising the current secret key leaves all prior encrypted communication secure. We investigate a novel dimension in the design of FSE schemes: fast-forwarding (FF).

A broken translational symmetry state in an infinite-layer nickelate - Nature Physics
Abstract A defining signature of strongly correlated electronic systems is a rich phase diagram, which consists of multiple broken symmetries, such as magnetism, superconductivity and charge order1,2. In the recently discovered nickelate superconductors3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10, a large antiferromagnetic exchange energy has been reported, which implies the existence of strong electronic correlations11. However, signatures of a broken-symmetry state other than superconductivity have not yet been observed.

TADs are 3D structural units of higher-order chromosome organization in Drosophila
Deciphering the rules of genome folding in the cell nucleus is essential to understand its functions. Recent chromosome conformation capture (Hi-C) studies have revealed that the genome is partitioned into topologically associating domains (TADs), which demarcate functional epigenetic domains defined by combinations of specific chromatin marks.
Pathological ECG that seemed normal following electrode misplacement
We report the case of a 57-year-old woman found at home who received an ECG after having recovered from a seizure, without any clinical cardiac anomaly. The ECG revealed an elevation of the ST segment from the V1 to V5 leads and negative T waves from V1 to V5 leads. At her hospital admission, the emergency care unit (ECU) nurse performed another ECG. It no longer showed any repolarisation anomaly.

PLAY IT UP July 7, 2016 by LAM Staff BY DANIEL JOST A yearlong design campaign in Philadelphia promotes the value of recreation. Today, young children spend much of their time in schools and child-care centers, but these places rarely offer rich outdoor environments for unstructured play. That’s a problem, says Sharon Easterling, the executive director of the Delaware Valley Association for the Education of Young Children. Such play is not just a leisure activity. It’s how children learn.
