Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

Freelancing for a local paper, one of the oldest in America, actually.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes, but not for professional writing. I'm too young to have done that.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

William Boot.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

A quick message is fine. The quality of the idea matters more than the specific formatting.

What's your favorite social network?

N/A

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

No, I had an atypical high school experience. I started freelancing for a local paper to earn extra money after my freshman year in college.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

If you can stomach a better paying job, life will be easier. Only do this if you feel compelled to.

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

Strong field. I get a lot of pitches from people who clearly know nothing about my work. They're mostly from professional marketers.
