182 Spring Street at the corner of Thompson, summer 2026. One World Trade rises behind it to the south. It looked great with the setting sun, so you can see why it grabbed my eye. Seven stories of sanded orange-red brick, laid as a wall and not hung as a screen. Windows punched deep enough to throw a shadow, framed in mahogany. A honed granite base. Glazed and matte terracotta at the storefronts and the top floor. A planted terrace stepping back at the roofline.

1727 Amsterdam Avenue, yesterday afternoon. The medical building on the west side of Amsterdam Avenue, between 145th and 146th, has been wrapped in a sidewalk shed for as long as I have been walking that stretch. Chain-link around the plaza, scaffolding up the brick, a security desk visible through the glass. It reads like a building mid-repair. Nothing is being repaired. The city built it, the city owns it, and the city has been trying to replace it since 2019. Two clinics operate inside.

Why You Can See the Empire State Building From This Parking Lot

The view from West 28th Street. I bet you’ve seen some version of this view before. If you only looked at a map, West 28th Street between Fifth Avenue and Broadway would read as a boring east-west block through southern Midtown, a minute’s walk from the 28th Street station. It happens to offer one of the most striking views of the Empire State Building in the city. Somebody posts the shot every few months.
