I Watched This Game: Canucks withstand the Avalanche, but fall in overtime
On Saturday night, Quinn Hughes played over 27 minutes against the Columbus Blue Jackets. It’s understandable: it was a tight, one-goal game, and the Vancouver Canucks needed their captain leading the way. Of course, he finished with 27:22 in ice time; it’s almost surprising he didn’t play more. On Sunday night, on the second half of back-to-back games, against the best team in the NHL, Hughes did play more.
Canucks call up Jiri Patera; is Thatcher Demko injured?
On Friday morning, the Vancouver Canucks called up goaltender Jiri Patera from the Abbotsford Canucks under emergency conditions. Understandably, fans were immediately concerned. What is the emergency? Is Kevin Lankinen hurt? Is Thatcher Demko hurt? Is it time for everyone to panic? Well, maybe. According to reports from ChekTV's Rick Dhaliwal and RinkWide's Irfan Gaffar, Lankinen isn't hurt and this is just about maintenance for Demko.
PWHL Vancouver reveals name: Vancouver Goldeneyes
Finally, Vancouver's PWHL team is no longer nameless. Welcome to the PWHL, the Vancouver Goldeneyes. It's an unexpected name reveal, with no connection to any of the rumoured names in the months ahead of the reveal. It's a name that some might connect more to the James Bond franchise than Vancouver (though Vancouver actually featured in one of the script rewrites for GoldenEye). The name comes from the Common Goldeneye, a duck with a large head and distinctive yellow eyes.
Canucks lines vs Wild, November 1, 2025
Brock Boeser is back. When Boeser took a slap shot to the unmentionables 33 seconds into Thursday's game against the St. Louis Blues, and he didn't return, all kinds of worst-case scenarios flashed through the minds of every Canucks fan with equivalent equipment. Thankfully, Boeser appears to be okay. He practiced with the team on Friday and is expected to be back in the lineup against the Minnesota Wild on Saturday night.
Canucks lines vs Rangers, October 28, 2025
It's Miller time. J.T. Miller is back in Vancouver for the first time since he was traded to the New York Rangers. "A lot of good memories here; some of my best friends still play on the other side," said Miller to the media on Tuesday morning. "The way the city treated myself and my family is something we'll never forget." Miller said that he brought his wife and daughters on the trip so that they could visit with their Vancouver friends on the team's day off on Monday.
Quinn Hughes injured, out day-to-day for Vancouver Canucks
The Vancouver Canucks have been wracked by injuries to start the 2025-26 season. Now their captain, and most important player, is the latest victim of the injury bug. On Sunday, Canucks head coach Adam Foote announced that Quinn Hughes is out of the Canucks' lineup with a lower-body injury. "Unfortunately, Huggy will be out tonight with a lower-body," said Foote. "It'll be day-to-day." Foote indicated that the injury occurred late in Saturday's game against the Montreal Canadiens.
Why PWHL Vancouver's preseason games with Seattle are closed to the public
Hockey fans are eagerly anticipating the PWHL coming to Vancouver, with the Pacific Coliseum expected to be packed for the as-yet unnamed team's home opener a month from now on November 21. But fans hoping to get a sneak peek at the team in the preseason are out of luck. PWHL Vancouver will host PWHL Seattle for two preseason games as part of their training camp, one on Saturday, November 15 at 7:00 p.m. and one on Sunday, November 16 at 5:00 p.m., both at the Pacific Coliseum.
'Super excited to have these colours': PWHL Vancouver debuts inaugural jerseys
Vancouver's PWHL team doesn't have a name or logo just yet, but they do have a jersey. On Tuesday, PWHL Vancouver unveiled their jerseys for their inaugural season at the Vancouver Lookout, with defence Ashton Bell and goaltender Kristen Campbell on hand to model the jerseys and answer questions from the gathered media. And the team assured everyone that they will have a name and logo ahead of their home opener on November 21.
The Canucks had no third pairing against the Blackhawks
Something happened during Friday’s game between the Vancouver Canucks and Chicago Blackhawks that I don’t think I’ve ever seen before. The Canucks’ third pairing on defence was ostensibly Elias Pettersson and Victor Mancini, two young defencemen who are playing their first full season in the NHL, even if they’re not technically rookies. That’s how the Canucks skated at practice: with Pettersson and Mancini on the third pairing. That’s how they were listed by the Canucks in their lineup.
Canucks call up Mancini two days after sending him down to AHL
Victor Mancini didn't stay with the Abbotsford Canucks for very long. The 23-year-old defenceman was sent down to the AHL on Sunday ahead of the NHL's opening-day roster deadline, as it seemed that Elias Pettersson had won the blue line battle among the team's young prospects. On Tuesday, however, the Canucks called Mancini right back up to the NHL. The likely reason is that the Canucks have an injury on defence.
Canucks Camp Cuts: Why the Canucks waived Vitali Kravtsov
Vitali Kravtsov was one of the top scorers in the KHL last season, putting up 58 points in 66 games. After such a strong season, he came back to North America to give the NHL another shot, signing a one-year contract with the Vancouver Canucks, who still held his rights. Kravtsov's attempt at an NHL comeback will most likely start in the AHL, however, as the Canucks placed him on waivers on Thursday. It's not hard to understand why.
PWHL Vancouver releases schedule for inaugural season
Professional hockey will make its return to the Pacific Coliseum on November 21. Vancouver's PWHL team may not have a name just yet, but it does have a schedule for its inaugural season. The PWHL announced their schedule on Wednesday, with PWHL Vancouver kicking off their season against their expansion cousins, PWHL Seattle. "It’s truly special to be starting our season at home in the Pacific Coliseum," said PWHL Vancouver's Jenn Gardiner in a press release.
The Vancouver Canucks took a scythe to their preseason roster on Monday, cutting 17 players. That's not too surprising. Heading into Monday, the Canucks still had 49 players on their roster; they've got to get down to a 23-man roster by October 6. This cut gets them closer to that goal, but there are many more cuts to come. As always, PITB is here to break down these cuts and take a look at what's next.

I Watched This Game: Cootes continues case to make Canucks in loss to Oilers
After the Vancouver Canucks’ last game, head coach Adam Foote said they’re taking things day by day with Braeden Cootes. “He had another great day,” said Foote on Friday. “So, he’ll probably play another one.” On Sunday, Cootes stepped onto the ice against his toughest opponent yet in his hometown (or hometown-adjacent) of Edmonton and had yet another great day. So, he’ll probably get another one.
Canucks Camp Cuts: Why Sawyer Mynio got sent to Abbotsford
Some cuts are smaller than others. Earlier in the week, the Vancouver Canucks sent nine players packing from training camp in the first cut of the year; on Friday, they cut just one player: Sawyer Mynio. The Canucks selected Mynio in the third round of the 2023 NHL Entry Draft, 89th overall, and showed their faith in the young defenceman by signing him to a three-year, entry-level contract just a few months later.
Injuries are inevitable. Hockey is fast, physical, and chaotic. It’s played by hard-hitting players with knives on their feet. There’s a piece of frozen rubber flying around at speeds of up to 100 miles per hour that can break your bones if it hits you the wrong way. Things can and will go wrong and your body will pay the price. It just hurts a little bit more when it’s a preseason game.
How to watch the Canucks' prospect showcase vs the Kraken
The Vancouver Canucks will be back in action Saturday night, more or less. The first game of the Canucks' two-game prospect showcase takes place tonight in Everett, WA at 6:00 p.m., with the second game on Sunday in Seattle at 4 p.m. For prospects like Elias "Junior" Pettersson, Jonathan Lekkerimäki, and Tom Willander, who have a legitimate shot at making the Canucks' roster to start the season, it's the first opportunity to prove they're ready to make the jump.
Can Braeden Cootes actually make the Canucks out of camp?
The Vancouver Canucks need a centre. Braeden Cootes, their first-round draft pick this year, is a centre. This is a “He was a boy; she was a girl” level of obvious. As much as it’s a long shot, Cootes is heading into training camp eyeing a spot on the Canucks’ roster, even if it’s just for a short audition before returning to Junior with the Seattle Thunderbirds. In his mind, there’s no other way to approach camp. “100 per cent,” said Cootes when asked if making the NHL this season is his goal.
10 actually bold predictions for the Vancouver Canucks' 2025-26 season
With the Vancouver Canucks’ training camp just two weeks away, it’s time to start looking at the upcoming 2025-26 season in earnest. That means it’s time for some bold predictions. Some hockey pundits make what they call “bold predictions,” but, like a salsa everyone at the table will enjoy, they’re actually pretty mild. Not here. It’s time for some actually bold predictions. Now, is it tempting with this type of headline to just make regular predictions and put them in a bold typeface? Of course.
The Vancouver Canucks’ first-ever training camp was in Calgary
Before the Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers battled to be Alberta’s team, the Vancouver Canucks made a bid. It may seem strange now, given that the Flames and Oilers are two of the Canucks’ biggest rivals, but when the Canucks first entered the NHL, they were the only Canadian team in the league west of Ontario. Alberta hadn’t had professional hockey in some time, with both the Calgary Stampeders and Edmonton Flyers of the WHL — the same league the pre-NHL Canucks played in — folding in 1963.
What kind of revenge will Elias Pettersson get next season?
Look out NHL: Elias Pettersson is on the warpath. In a recent Swedish interview with Peter Ekholm for NHL.com, Pettersson took a break from talking about his offseason training and adding muscle to drop one of the coldest quotes of the offseason. “For my part, I want revenge,” said Pettersson, via Google Translate. And, to be clear, the word he used in Swedish is revanschlust, a compound word combining the word for revenge — revansch — and lust.
Can Aatu Räty be the Canucks’ second-line centre?
The Vancouver Canucks’ management group has made no bones about needing another top-six centre. Even when general manager Patrik Allvin was in the midst of hyping up Filip Chytil on the 100% Canucks podcast, he had to admit that they still wanted to add another centre. “If you look around the league, the centres are a priority in how you build your team,” said Allvin.
Canucks re-sign Max Sasson to one-year contract extension
The Vancouver Canucks will be bringing back a key member of the Abbotsford Canucks' Calder Cup championship. On Monday, the Canucks re-signed Max Sasson to a one-year contract extension. The deal comes in at the league-minimum cap hit of $775,000. The key for Sasson is that it's a one-way deal, which means he'll be paid the same amount whether he's in the AHL or the NHL.
Canucks pick Gabe Chiarot 175th overall in sixth round of 2025 NHL Entry Draft
The Vancouver Canucks picked one of the youngest prospects in the 2025 NHL Entry Draft when they selected goaltender Alexei Medvedev in the second round. In the sixth round, the Canucks selected one of the oldest first-time draft-eligible prospects in Gabe Chiarot. With a September 17 birthday, if Chiarot were two days older, he would have been eligible for the 2024 draft.
The 20 best names in the 2025 NHL Entry Draft
The 2025 NHL Entry Draft is tomorrow. Some NHL teams may still be finalizing their draft lists, fine-tuning them to make sure they’ve got each prospect slotted in the right spot before their general manager trades away all of their picks. Likewise, hardcore hockey fans are poring over independent draft rankings, preparing themselves to be extremely upset when their team doesn’t pick the diamond in the rough that one guy on YouTube really liked.
Why the Canucks traded for Evander Kane from the Oilers
On Wednesday morning, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman dropped a bombshell, reporting that the Vancouver Canucks were trading for Evander Kane from the Edmonton Oilers. Shortly after, Kane himself confirmed the deal, posting a farewell to Edmonton on his Twitter account. "I’m incredibly excited for the next chapter of my career as I join the Canucks," said Kane. "It’s an honor to become part of an organization and team I grew up watching as a kid.
Canucks prospect Lekkerimäki leads Abbotsford to Game 4 win in Calder Cup Final
The Abbotsford Canucks are one game away from winning the Calder Cup. On Thursday night at the Abbotsford Centre, the Canucks took a stranglehold in the Calder Cup Final, beating the Charlotte Checkers 3-2, giving them a 3-1 series lead. They’ll now have three chances to clinch the Calder Cup, with their first chance coming on home ice on June 21. The story of the game was written by three Canucks prospects: Jonathan Lekkerimäki, Arshdeep Bains, and Arturs Silovs.
13 prospects the Canucks could pick 15th overall in the 2025 NHL Entry Draft
It feels like a given that the Vancouver Canucks will trade their first-round pick this year. The Canucks have been clear that they need another top-six centre and that they’ll likely need to make a trade to get one, and the 15th-overall pick in the 2025 NHL Entry Draft is one of their biggest trade chips. But before deciding to trade the 15th-overall pick, the Canucks need to seriously consider the consequences.
Bains and Karlsson lead Canucks to Game 3 win in Calder Cup Final
The Stanley Cup Final between the Florida Panthers and the Edmonton Oilers started with the two teams splitting the first two games in Edmonton before the series returned to Florida, where the Panthers celebrated their return to home ice by walloping the Oilers 6-to-1. So far, the Calder Cup Final is following the same script, albeit with the team that is part of the Panthers' system on the losing end.
SZA wore a Trevor Linden jersey in Toronto but was it a jersey foul?
SZA was spotted onstage in Toronto in a Team Canada jersey with Trevor Linden's name on the back. Kendrick and SZA took their Grand National Tour international on Thursday and Friday, playing two sold out shows at Rogers Centre in Toronto, ON, the first stops on the tour outside of the United States. It's not unusual for artists to wear a hockey jersey on stage that represents the city in which they're playing.
Yogi Svejkovsky leaves Canucks for Flyers to join Rick Tocchet
The Vancouver Canucks will have another hole to fill behind the bench for next season. Yaroslav "Yogi" Svejkovsky will be leaving the Canucks and signing with the Philadelphia Flyers, according to reports by David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period and Rick Dhaliwal of ChekTV. Svejkovsky will be sticking with former Canucks head coach Rick Tocchet after he jumped ship to join the Flyers last month. Assistant coach Yogi Svejkovsky is leaving the #Canucks for Philadelphia to join Rick Tocchet.
Should the Vancouver Canucks try to trade for Marco Rossi?
The Vancouver Canucks need a second-line centre and have few avenues available to acquire one. That was a focal point of the end-of-season press conference with Canucks general manager Patrik Allvin and president of hockey operations Jim Rutherford. Both emphasized the necessity of upgrading at centre after the departure of J.T. Miller.

The Abbotsford Canucks have gone on one heck of a run in the Calder Cup Playoffs. The Vancouver Canucks’ AHL affiliate took down the Pacific-winning Colorado Eagles on Monday, winning 5-to-0 in the winner-take-all fifth game of the best-of-five series. Now, the Canucks will head into the Western Conference Finals, where they’ll face the Texas Stars in a best-of-seven series, with the winner moving on to the Calder Cup Finals to face either the Laval Rocket or Charlotte Checkers.
Canucks Pettersson, Garland will face off in World Championship semifinal
The last remaining members of the Vancouver Canucks at the 2025 IIHF World Championship will face off in the semifinals on Saturday. Earlier on Thursday, Conor Garland and Drew O'Connor moved on from the quarterfinals with Team USA, thanks in part to Garland's two goals against Finland. Later in the day, they were joined by Marcus Pettersson and Sweden, who knocked out Filip Hronek and Czechia in one of the other three quarterfinal matches.
Who is Anri Ravinskis, the Canucks' latest free-agent signing?
It turns out that the Vancouver Canucks didn’t have four players at the 2025 IIHF World Championship; they had five. On Thursday, the Canucks announced the signing of Anri Ravinskis, who represented Latvia at the tournament. The undrafted free agent signed a two-year, entry-level contract for $1.75 million — a cap hit of $873,000.
Four Canucks heading to World Championship quarterfinals
The Vancouver Canucks' four representatives at the 2025 IIHF World Hockey Championship are still going strong. All four Canucks made it through the preliminary round with their respective countries and are heading into the quarterfinals, which take place on Thursday, May 22. It was a comfortable preliminary round for all four; while none of their countries won their group, they all finished within two points of the leaders.
Canucks prospect Anthony Romani commits to Michigan State University
Back in November of 2024, the NCAA changed its rules on eligibility, allowing players from Canada's major junior leagues — the WHL, OHL, and QMJHL — to play hockey for a Division I school. At least one Vancouver Canucks prospect will be taking advantage of this change, as Anthony Romani has committed to Michigan State University for the 2025-26 season. Romani and MSU announced his commitment on Instagram.
The disastrous 2024-25 Vancouver Canucks season keeps on disastering. So much went wrong for the Canucks over the past year, but the bad news didn’t end when the season did. They lost the draft lottery, they haven't signed their top prospect, their ownership is in flux, and their Twitter account got hacked by crypto scammers. It's been a lot. And, of course, head coach Rick Tocchet, the reigning Jack Adams winner, won’t be returning to the Canucks next season.
The Canucks have extremely long odds at 2025 NHL Draft Lottery
The Vancouver Canucks are back in the draft lottery. Sort of. For the eighth time in the last decade, the Canucks are out of the playoffs. Instead of playing in the postseason, they'll be watching ping pong balls get plucked out of a lottery machine to determine where they pick in the first round of the NHL Entry Draft.
Beyond tampering, Rutherford did Hughes a disservice with comment about brothers
Did the Vancouver Canucks’ president of hockey operations commit some tampering on Monday? By the letter of the law, maybe. But, more importantly, he likely caused some unnecessary drama for the most important player on his team. The Canucks have a lot of needs to address in the offseason, as the team must address their forward group after finishing 23rd in the NHL in goals and 31st in shots on goal. But the team’s biggest need of all is a simple one: they need to keep Quinn Hughes happy.

Brock Boeser: Vancouver ‘will always be home to me’
There was a certain finality to Brock Boeser’s end-of-season media availability. While it’s certainly possible that Boeser will re-sign with the Vancouver Canucks, the pending unrestricted free agent himself admitted that it probably wasn’t in the cards about a week ago. “Honestly, it's unlikely at this point,” said Boeser to Sportsnet’s Iain MacIntyre. “It sucks, it's unfortunate. I'm just trying to play good hockey, and then I'll worry about everything after that.
I Watched This Game: Elias Pettersson's first NHL goal kicks off Canucks record against the Ducks
With the Stanley Cup Playoffs essentially out of reach for the Vancouver Canucks, the remaining games in their schedule seem largely meangingless. But that’s not the case. Saturday afternoon’s game against the Anaheim Ducks held a great deal of meaning, both for one particular player and for the franchise as a whole. For Elias “Junior” Pettersson, Saturday was a very memorable day because he scored his first career NHL goal, finally finding the back of the net in his 22nd NHL game.
Canucks lines vs Ducks, April 5, 2025
The Vancouver Canucks have been hit hard by injuries all season; why should now be any different? Heading into Saturday afternoon's game against the Anaheim Ducks, the Canucks are expected to be missing Elias Pettersson, Filip Chytil, Nils Höglander, Nils Åman, and Tyler Myers. Chytil is likely done for the season as he deals with "good days and bad days" recovering from the fifth documented concussion of his professional career.
I Watched This Game: Canucks trip over themselves in crucial game against Utah
Well, that was dreadful. The Vancouver Canucks had a significant opportunity to create some separation in the standings between themselves and the teams chasing them for the final Wild Card spot in the Western Conference. Instead, they came out flatter than the band at an elementary school Christmas concert. In one of the biggest games of the season, the Canucks managed just four shots on goal in the first period against the Utah Hockey Club.
Canucks lines vs Utah, March 16, 2025
There are just too many teams competing for the final Wild Card spot in the Western Conference. On Sunday, the Vancouver Canucks have a chance to put some distance between themselves and at least one of those teams, the Utah Hockey Club. Utah simply won't go away. They've been nipping at the Canucks' heels most of the season and their 8-5-2 record since the beginning of February has kept them outside of a playoff spot but still in contention.
I Watched This Game: Lankinen's 37 saves tame the Wild in 2-1 Canucks win
For better or for worse, these are the Vancouver Canucks for the rest of the 2024-25 season. On Friday night against the Minnesota Wild, it was for the better. The Canucks kept quiet on trade deadline day, neither trading any of their players nor acquiring additional players for the stretch run to the playoffs. There are fans on both sides of the aisle — those who wanted the Canucks to sell and those who wanted them to buy — who are disappointed.
