The recent visit to our solar system by the interstellar object 3I/ATLAS has sparked speculation about whether it’s another frozen rock from a distant solar system or an alien craft. Though all evidence to date suggests it’s a comet and not first contact, it’s worthwhile to think about how we might respond if an alien civilization ever sent an emissary. How would we begin to communicate? What might we learn? Making mental contact with an alien intelligence is not likely to be easy.
