Columbia undergraduate, journalist, jokester.

Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

I would say the first piece I wrote for the Columbia Daily Spectator. Why weren't the Barnard Quad lounges renovated yet? No one knew.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yup, we had a type-writer when I was kid, but my dad threw it away when we got a computer. It's only now as a 'cool' adult that I miss it.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

Being a journalist means teetering on that increasingly blurry line of truth, ethics, and getting the best story.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Literally, just throw them at me.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Oh let's see... Audacity, TweetDeck, Google Drive, Starbucks, etc.

What's your favorite social network?

Twitter. "I tweet; therefore, I am."-@descartes

Why did you become a journalist?

I believe the media is one of the most powerful organizations in the world, and I (perhaps naively) believe I can make a positive difference.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

To be perfectly honest, I remember scandalously quoting my fellow journalism classmates in articles. (Our newspaper was somewhat of a joke.)

When's the best time to pitch you?

I would say anytime, but actually early in the morning; I love the productivity of 9 a.m.

What's the best pitch you ever got?

Someone once pitched me a piece about raisins. I was so happy, they're great. The article wasn't popular, turns out people don't like them.

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

Someone once pitched me a story about raisins. In hindsight, that wasn't the greatest idea. But at the time I was blinded by love of raisins.

What's your favorite drink?

Whole milk. People are always like "It's too creamy," but that's just because someone tricked them into thinking *bleh* skim isn't water.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

If I'm not at my computer, I'm probably outside. Maybe in Central or Riverside Park.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

Probably The Guardian, though there are many that I love.
