The 2026 Global Citizen Awards: Celebrating leadership that builds what comes next

The Atlantic Council’s greatest hits of 2023
In October, I urged US President Joe Biden to “connect the dots” on the threats to the global order posed by Russia’s revanchism, China’s antagonism, and Hamas’s brutality. It was a natural point to make because that’s what the talented team at the Atlantic Council does best. We connect the dots for policymakers on the most urgent global challenges of our age—and the list is long, from artificial intelligence to climate change to trade policy and beyond.
Maine cannot afford to not invest now in its public university infrastructure
For decades, the University of Maine System has seriously underinvested in its statewide physical plant. More than half of academic spaces and three-quarters of residence halls have not undergone real renovation since students used slide rules. Classrooms are not conducive to 21st-century workforce preparation. Research labs lack capacity to meet industry innovation needs. And too many Mainers are opting for costlier out-of-state colleges and higher debt.

Dispatch from Abu Dhabi: How to reduce carbon emissions without blocking progress
If the world gets lucky, this could be the year fossil fuel producers and climate activists bury their hatchets and join hands to reduce emissions and ensure our planet’s future. If that sounds hopelessly Utopian, take that up with the leaders of this resource-rich, renewables-generating Middle Eastern monarchy.
Live updates from Abu Dhabi as world leaders gather for the Global Energy Forum
Call it a double whammy: The two-hit blow to the global energy system—dealt by the COVID-19 pandemic and Russia’s war in Ukraine—is wreaking havoc, bringing uncertainty about the future of energy security and the pace of the energy transition. But that’s only spurred the world’s most influential energy experts and policymakers to take another look at the needs of the energy system and devise new policies, practices, and standards to fill those needs.
COP28 president-designate: With the world ‘way off track’ on Paris goals, ‘transformational progress’ is needed
With a pivotal United Nations climate change summit set to take place in the United Arab Emirates at the end of this year, “the world is playing catch-up” to implement emissions-reduction goals, said the newly designated president of the summit.
Setting the G20 agenda for food security: Experts and policymakers gather in Bali to find solutions to an urgent challenge
Hunger and malnutrition often destroy silently. They stunt the development of the young and steal health, energy, and productivity from all ages. They also rob from the future as families look no further than their next meal. These depredations produce starvation and other types of disruption within communities, and occasionally explode outward in the form of political instability and violence. Few issues are more critical to both local and global stability than food security.

10 Shows to Watch for a "More Mature" Power Rangers
Share Tweet Share Email Go, go, Super Sentai! Power Rangers brings to mind a very specific image for most people: a group of teenagers with attitude in rainbow spandex fighting villains in rubber suits week-to-week while learning a lesson about why cheating is bad. Johnny Isakson, 76, Georgia politician respected by both sides, dies
From his successful career in real estate to when Georgia’s Republican Party was mostly confined to a small knot in Cobb County to Congress, Isakson learned early on what it took to get two sides to an agreement. And he continued to ply those skills even after the GOP cemented its political dominance in the state, making him a uniquely beloved figure among Democrats and Republicans alike for more than four decades.

The risky logic behind China’s economic strategy: ‘Politics in command’
In a marked shift from its once-sacrosanct policy of economic reform and market opening, China these days seems to be increasingly tightening the state’s hand over business. Its government-controlled press is warning multinationals like Nike and United Airlines to keep silent over the situations in Xinjiang and the Taiwan Strait—or risk being pushed out of the market.
Will Amazon’s Union Change the World?
It’s the kind of workplace you can find most anywhere: a sprawling small-town fulfillment center for Amazon. But the choice made by the nearly 6,000 workers at this plant in Bessemer, Alabama, is ringing across the globe: Will they vote to form a union? The result, which will be known in the coming days but could be tied up in litigation far longer, may shake a behemoth that dominates American commerce in a way no company ever has.

Donald Dossier: Who Needs a Press Secretary Anyway?
Because the role as we knew it no longer exists. The White House press secretary, as we’ve known the role previously performed by such luminaries as George Stephanopoulos, Dana Perino and C.J. Cregg, is no more. The famous ritual of standing behind a podium with the White House seal and deflecting the questions of reporters with varying levels of hair product was always ill-suited for the age of Twitter and is most certainly out the window in the age of Trump.

This Prolific Nerd Is Shaping the Future of Wikipedia
Because Wikipedia is at an adolescent crossroads. The act was a touch sophomoric in retrospect, but in Steven Pruitt’s defense, he was, in fact, a college sophomore when he sat down at his computer to compose his first article for a 3-year-old website called Wikipedia. Peter Francisco was a noteworthy subject — a brutally effective Revolutionary War soldier known as the “Virginia Hercules” — but he was also Pruitt’s ancestor.

Why Millennials Are Running for Office in Droves
WHY YOU SHOULD CARE Because protests alone don’t change policy. The son of a steelworker and a hairdresser, both emigrants from Mexico, he grew up watching C-SPAN and became a union leader for the film industry in Los Angeles. Today he’s running for Congress in the suburbs north of Atlanta as a Christian, working-class Independent fed up with both parties.
Election Dispatch: The Next Phase of Trump
WHY YOU SHOULD CARE Because the Trump era is far from over. Like so many aspects of the Donald Trump presidency, the end won’t be normal. After media organizations called the election for Joe Biden, Trump refused to concede and has vowed to continue his quixotic legal quest to prove voter fraud and invalidate tens of thousands of votes in key states. Plus, he fired his defense secretary today. So what do the next 10 weeks and a post-presidency look like for Trump?
Is It Time to Call It?
It’s pretty much all over. Apart from the shouting … and the potential constitutional crisis, that is. This morning, Joe Biden surged ahead in Georgia and Pennsylvania, birthing a thousand Philadelphia-related memes and putting him firmly in position to earn 270 electoral votes — though major networks have been reluctant to formally call the race and declare him president-elect, and President Donald Trump has shown no indication that he will concede. So now what? Your Daily Dose is here to serve.
Biden Won. Now What?
It’s all over. Apart from the shouting … and the potential constitutional crisis, that is. But President Donald Trump has shown no indication that he will concede. So now what? Your Daily Dose is here to serve. what’s next Concession Speech?
The Wildcard Moves Trump Has Left
In our instant gratification world, it’s a bit maddening: It’s been two days since the election, and we still don’t know who the president will be come January. This is not in and of itself a sign of mischief, but rather a reflection of thousands of local jurisdictions methodically counting votes, many of which arrived in the form of time-consuming mail ballots, to decide a teeth-grittingly tight election.
What to Expect From the Election Turbulence to Come
What a night. The presidential race has gone down to the wire, and while some clarity is starting to emerge, significant numbers of votes are still expected to be counted in key states that will determine whether President Donald Trump or Joe Biden wins the White House. No matter what happens, the nation has already been shaken by a stunningly close election, one that calls into question what, exactly, America stands for.

Political Tremors: How to Survive Election Day Drama

Today’s Sunday Magazine is a deep dive to prep you for Tuesday — and beyond, as a mass of mail in votes could stretch the drama for weeks. What should you be watching for in the key states?
Business coalitions form to back climate change bill
WASHINGTON -- Clad in a pinstripe suit, Josh McNeil made the rounds on Capitol Hill yesterday, lobbying for climate change legislation. Mr. McNeil, who met with staff members for Sens. Bob Casey and Arlen Specter, is a typical kind of advocate for the bill, which would force drastic reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. From the group's Philadelphia office, he runs Pennsylvania operations for the League of Conservation Voters, an environmental group.
An India-sized hole in David Perdue's resume
After he left as CEO of Dollar General, Republican David Perdue worked between 2007 and 2009 with a textile conglomerate in India to build up a new retail line. The enterprise did not work out for Gujarat Heavy Chemicals -- and Perdue scrubbed it from his online bio in the months before he entered the race for U.S. Senate. The Hill has the story: "In 2007, after a major turn-around that included the sale of a Fortune 500 company, he retired to pursue international entrepreneurial interests.
