Backed by Southern Hills and USGA IDEA Grant, First Tee Tulsa Generates Community Impact
It started off as a simple enough goal for Southern Hills Country Club: How can we make the Tulsa community better through golf? The answer, it turns out, wasn’t too much more complicated – create the city’s inaugural First Tee chapter. “Golf has a rich tradition in the community, and the club’s Board of Governors was committed to finding the most effective way to expand the game’s reach,” First Tee-Tulsa Executive Director Janice Gibson said.

Though just in its second year, the program has already had an impact on its participants as well as the industry, according to Pinehurst Resort & Country Club’s director of golf course maintenance Bob Farren and golf course maintenance manager Kevin Robinson.

Stanton heads to IL... again
The Yankees announced Monday afternoon that Giancarlo Stanton was heading to the IL with a left quad strain retroactive to May 14. Stanton missed the weekend series against the Orioles after informing Aaron Boone of tightness following the Yankees’ loss to Tampa Bay on Thursday.
Two years since the last series win in Tampa, Yankees need to stop the bleeding
On May 10, 2019, Gio Urshela turned a 3-2 sixth-inning deficit in Tampa Bay into a 4-3 lead with a bases loaded single against Emilio Pagan. The bullpen combined for four shutout innings from there as the Yankees opened the three-game set with a win before splitting the next two to capture the series.
Frazier’s continued struggles could prompt a quick Andujar recall
Hours before Miguel Andujar boarded the Scranton shuttle following a three-game weekend call-up against the Nationals, Clint Frazier made the third out of the eighth inning with the go-ahead run on second via an infield pop-up. The at-bat capped an 0-for-4 day for Frazier who had just one hit in three starts during the three-game set. He’s seven for this last 63 (.111) since April 9 and has just three hits over the Yankees’ last three series’ (eight starts).
Yankees, so far, immune from MLB injury bug
Ken Rosenthal took a detailed look at the historically high rate of injuries plaguing baseball Tuesday in The Athletic – a troublesome revelation for MLB but one that actually paints a positive picture for the New York Yankees. Embed from Getty Images Per information provided to Rosenthal from an independent firm, overall IL placements are up 15 percent in the first month of this year compared with 2019 with a 22 percent increase for pitchers and a 97 percent increase in soft-tissue injuries.
Yankees finally assign Jasson Dominguez
The Yankees announced minor league assignments for their four affiliates Sunday with one notable omission: uber-phenom Jasson Dominguez.
What the 'long game' means for Aaron Judge long term
Aaron Judge was left out of the starting lineup for the second-straight game Thursday for what Aaron Boone cited as playing the “long game. It’s Judge’s fourth missed start of the year for reasons that the organization has intentionally kept vague and follows his noticeable absence from the Yankees final three spring training games. The team has played 25 regular season games meaning Judge has started 84 percent of them.
Yankees injury report: Voit close, Britton takes mound
Thinking back to Opening Day, what would have been harder to believe about where the Yankees would stand on April 27 – that they’d have a 9-13 record or that injuries wouldn’t be decimating the lineup? Given the length of the Yankees injury list over the last few seasons, the fact that the 2021 season has so far been a relatively healthy one is one (maybe the only one not named Gerrit Cole?) positive takeaway of this year’s team.
Cashman’s address does little to reassure anyone
Brian Cashman broke his silence on the state of the Yankees Monday with an uninspiring Zoom press conference. The takeaway message? Status quo: “We’ve had a lot of storms hit along the way, and change doesn’t happen without a great deal of thought and reason. We’re not reactive.
Initial turn through Yankees rotation provides reason for optimism
The thousand-pound question mark in the room for the New York Yankees seems less worrisome today after their first (almost) full trip through the rotation ended with a dominant performance from Jordan Montgomery Monday night. Embed from Getty Images With only Jameson Taillon left to make his debut, the Yankees have to feel pretty good about how this piecemealed rotation has looked and optimistic about where it can take them behind Gerrit Cole.
What to Du about Miguel?
For the second-straight opening day, Miguel Andujar’s name won’t be on the lineup card. It’s a fact that seemed unfathomable two years ago when the then 24-year-old was coming off a Rookie of the Year-caliber season and batting fifth against the Orioles to open the 2019 season. From what we all thought would be a franchise cornerstone to afterthought – the fall is pretty remarkable. But maybe worse than that, does it really matter to anyone that he’s not going to be in the Bronx this week?
With opt-out looming, signs point to Bruce for Yankees bench
The Jay Bruce question will be answered one way or another Thursday. That’s the deadline that was set when he signed a minor league deal with a major league spring training invite with the Yankees in February. The clause in his contact is simple – add Bruce to the 40-man roster (and in turn, the opening day roster) by the deadline or he can walk. An option to the minors to start the season isn’t a possibility as the major league market will be there for the big veteran bat.
Deivi vs. Domingo gives the Yankees a welcomed problem
Sitting just over two weeks out from opening day, is it safe to say the Yankees’ biggest question mark is which currently dealing starter will earn the fifth rotation spot heading into opening day? It’s an issue that Domingo German and Deivi Garcia are causing and one the Yankees welcome with open arms.
Gary becoming scary again?
Since most spring training overreactions tend to skew negative, it seems necessary to visit the other side of the spectrum through the lens of one of the most maligned Yankees in recent history: Gary Sanchez. Sanchez is mashing so far on the eve of a make-or-break year with three hits in nine at bats including two homers and two walks.
David Cone impressed by Kluber, Taillon in early spring assessment
Brendan Kuty of NJ.com spoke with David Cone this week to get the retired righty’s early take on the Yankees pitching this spring. Most reassuring to Yankees fans was Cone’s perception that Corey Kluber was, “turning it loose last week in his debut and, “not babying it. Kluber’s performance backed up the optics as he struck out three in two innings while using just 22 pitches, and it reaffirms the healthy narrative that him and the Yankees have been pushing since camp opened.
There’s really only one position battle this spring
Brian Cashman loves creating competition in camp. It’s been one of the staples of his tenure and a mentality that most prominently came to life in the spring of 2017 when he persistently maintained that the right field spot was an open competition.
The Domingo German dilemma
In a rotation built on surgeries, it was a little surprising that Domingo German has emerged as one of the early question marks in Yankees camp. But while September of 2019 might seem like a long time ago given everything that’s transpired in the world, it’s clear that the 28-year-old still has a long way to go to rebuild his reputation, if it’s even possible at all.
Brian Cashman hoping bargain shopping nets big return
The Yankees continued their off-season discount shopping Monday with the news that a bullpen reunion with lefty Justin Wilson was pending a physical. Following the signings of Corey Kluber and Darren O’Day, trade of Adam Ottavino, trade for Jameson Taillon and free agent departures of Masahiro Tanaka and James Paxton, the ownership mandate to Cashman is clear – keep the Yankees under the luxury tax threshold while fielding a championship team.
Keith Law ranks Yankees farm system 14th
Minor league baseball go-to Keith Law released his 1-30 rankings of MLB’s best farm systems in The Athletic Wednesday, slotting the Yankees in the middle of the pack at No. 14.
