Everybody can take advantage of Wisconsin's public records law. Ask us how on Reddit
Sunshine Week is a nonpartisan collaboration among groups in the journalism, civic, education, government and private sectors that shines a light on the importance of public records and open government. . Public records are one of the most powerful tools available to reporters — and the public. Now, we're lifting the curtain on how any member of the public can use Wisconsin open records law to shed light on how local and state government is working.
We're teaming up with TMJ4 and Wisconsin Watch to investigate problematic police officers Original
Reporters have long sought Milwaukee County's closely-guarded list of law enforcement officers with a history of dishonesty, bias or past crimes. It’s known as the “Brady list,” and for years, the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office resisted efforts to release the full list publicly. But after pressure from local news organizations, the District Attorney’s Office has released a list of nearly 200 names.

AcrIF11 is a potent CRISPR-specific ADP-ribosyltransferase encoded by phage and plasmid
Abstract Phage-encoded anti-CRISPR (Acr) proteins inhibit CRISPR-Cas systems to allow phage replication and lysogeny maintenance. Most of the Acrs characterized to date are stable stoichiometric inhibitors, and while enzymatic Acrs have been characterized biochemically, little is known about their potency, specificity, and reversibility. Here, we examine AcrIF11, a widespread phage and plasmid-encoded ADP-ribosyltransferase (ART) that inhibits the Type I-F CRISPR-Cas system.

The End of a Journey: Letter to My Past
Dear Past Me, A lot has happened since my initial letter. Compared to my great insecurity and worry stemming from my lack of direction, things have greatly improved. I’ve applied to grad school (that was a whole crazy story on its own), and received some acceptance letters! Not all of them have gotten back to me, but the fact that some of them have is really comforting. Life is still a bit uncertain, but there’s more of a plan now.
Love, Food, and Culture: Stories from My Life
The opinions expressed in this article are the writer’s own and do not reflect the views of Her Campus. Love can take many different forms and in my culture, my family expressed their love through food. There has always been a strong relationship between food and culture, and my life is proof of that. I knew that food was a way of exhibiting one’s culture, but I didn’t realize how often my family used food as a way to express their love until recently.
My Sustainable Consumption Journey
The opinions expressed in this article are the writer’s own and do not reflect the views of Her Campus. Moment of Radicalization I was quite sheltered towards the injustices that enable the production of our everyday products because I was never taught about these social issues and my family was unfamiliar about the topic as well. As I grew older and gained online freedom through access to my own phone, I learned through social media of the exploitation within the diamond mining industry.
Why Sustainability Should Be More Than Just Environmental
The opinions expressed in this article are the writer’s own and do not reflect the views of Her Campus. “Sustainability” is often a term used in mainstream media that is synonymous with “environmentally friendly”. The fast fashion industry is a culprit of this and often markets their product as ‘sustainable’ by having their clothes be made from recycled fabric (or something of that sort).
How My Family Celebrates the Lunar New Year
The opinions expressed in this article are the writer’s own and do not reflect the views of Her Campus. This week’s theme at HerCampus is holiday traditions; I thought it would be fitting to write about the Lunar New Year as it is quickly approaching (it’s on January 22 this year!). Similarly to other holidays, the date for the Lunar New Year is different every year seeing as it follows the moon cycle.
The Normalization of Hustle Culture under Capitalism
The opinions expressed in this article are the writer’s own and do not reflect the views of Her Campus. Current Capitalist Domination Over Economies Capitalism is a term that many people are familiar with and is defined as an economic model characterized by the privatization of corporations and a for-profit business model. Many countries operate under this model in some shape or form – even Communist or Socialist countries allow for private ownership to a certain degree.
Environmental Responsibility Should Not Fall on Consumers
The opinions expressed in this article are the writer’s own and do not reflect the views of Her Campus. It is no secret that our planet is *not so* slowly being destroyed beyond repair, and hardly any action has yet been taken to stop this from occurring. While there has been a rise in environmental consciousness over the past few years, the rate at which we are killing the earth is still significantly more rapid than the rate at which we are saving it. How is that even possible?
The social consequences of consumer culture in fast fashion
10 The opinions expressed in this article are the writer’s own and do not reflect the views of Her Campus. Previously, I have written about the environmental consequences of consumer culture in fast fashion. In that article, I talked about the connection between flex culture and consumer culture, while highlighting the link through the fast fashion industry. If you would like to read that article, you can do so here.
It’s Expensive Being Poor
10 The opinions expressed in this article are the writer’s own and do not reflect the views of Her Campus. Poverty is prevalent in all societies, and it is an issue that we need to desperately tackle. Poverty includes the harsh reality of realizing that being poor means spending more. While this statement seems odd and counterintuitive on the surface, people below the poverty line often have to spend more on daily needs than people who are financially stable.
The Environmental Consequences of Consumer Culture in Fast Fashion
The opinions expressed in this article are the writer’s own and do not reflect the views of Her Campus. In combination with the concept of flex culture and mass consumption, consumer culture and the need to buy more things has been rampant for quite some time now. The term ‘flex culture’ is slang for the environment cultivated by people showing off their material wealth.
How I Stay Sane in University
The opinions expressed in this article are the writer’s own and do not reflect the views of Her Campus. Attending university can be stressful with all of the impending due dates, and it is common to stop prioritising your health in favour of getting work done. However, I’ve learned the hard way that constantly neglecting your needs is unsustainable and will just lead to burn out in the end.
Rating Movies I Binge-Watched During the Summer
Tales of Princess Kaguya– 5/10 While I have a special spot for Studio Ghibli movies, this was not my favourite. The movie follows the life of a nymph born out of a bamboo shoot, who was then raised by a bamboo cutter and his wife. The animation of this movie is unique and beautiful (as expected of Studio Ghibli), but I wasn’t a big fan of the storyline.
Wisconsin Supreme Court rules in favor of releasing data on COVID outbreaks at businesses after two-year public records battle
More than a year after Wisconsin's largest business lobby sued to stop the state from releasing data on companies with COVID outbreaks, a narrowly divided Wisconsin Supreme Court on Tuesday ruled in favor of releasing the records. The majority opinion, written by Justice Rebecca Dallet, asserts that Wisconsin Manufacturers & Commerce did not have the right to challenge the state health department's authority to release public records.

Rating March K-Pop Comebacks
The opinions expressed in this article are the writer’s own and do not reflect the views of Her Campus. Over the past few years, K-Pop has definitely earned its place and popularity in mainstream media. I used to be an avid fan of K-Pop music back when I first started college but have since outgrown it a little and stopped paying attention to new releases as much. While I personally stopped keeping track, my Instagram explore page has not.
Milwaukee home styles, architecture reveal city’s history
As Marquette University research fellow John Johnson biked around Milwaukee last year, it didn’t take long for the architecture buff to notice something about the city’s houses. “I was recognizing patterns, but they weren’t patterns that corresponded to north side, south side, east side,” Johnson said. So Johnson turned to a database from the City Assessor’s Office, which attempts to assign an architectural style to each of Milwaukee's roughly 130,000 residential homes.
A Letter for When I Graduate College
The opinions expressed in this article are the writer’s own and do not reflect the views of Her Campus. Dear Future Me, I can’t imagine what you’re feeling right now, but I hope its happy ones. At the present time, I’m writing this letter in Leddy Library under the ridiculously loud ventilation system, feeling very confused about the future. Life right now seems a little uncertain, especially about what to do immediately after graduation. Hopefully by then we’ll have somewhat figured it out.
Wires and Fires - Goldsmith Awards
Raquel Rutledge, John Diedrich, Daphne Chen Electrical fires are often treated as accidents in Milwaukee, but an investigation by reporters at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel found that they are actually foreseeable tragedies that hit Black renters by far the hardest, with the government doing little to fix the problem.
3 Memorable Moments from January 2022
The opinions expressed in this article are the writer’s own and do not reflect the views of Her Campus. On the night of December 30th 2021, I arrived in the land of ‘moose and goose.’ It’s been about a month since I left my home country and I’ve already experienced a lot more than I expected I would. First Culture Shock My first culture shock in Canada happened about an hour after I got off the airplane.
My Best Purchases
The opinions expressed in this article are the writer’s own and do not reflect the views of Her Campus. In the age of SHEIN hauls and overconsumption, I always find it a bit outrageous to spend so much on something that either won’t last long or that people won’t get a lot of use from . I’ve made my fair share of unwise purchases just because it was trendy or cheap, but there have been some things that I’ve bought that I don’t regret buying.

Milwaukee police are investigating a fatal automobile crash around 3 a.m. on Saturday morning in the 1400 block of West Layton Avenue. Milwaukee Police Department captain Eric Pfeiffer said a vehicle was traveling east on West Layton Avenue, near General Mitchell International Airport, when it crossed the median and collided with a westbound vehicle.
Wisconsin & Southern Railroad train hits, kills man in Waukesha
A pedestrian was struck and killed Saturday morning by a Wisconsin & Southern Railroad train at the West Moreland Boulevard crossing in Waukesha, according to police. The Waukesha Police Department said they received calls from citizens and the Canadian National Railroad Company around 10:55 a.m. reporting the incident. Lt. 'Making Milwaukee a better place.' Community activists, officials tackle scourge of faulty wiring endangering city renters
Jim Gaillard, vice president of Ezekiel Project Hope, removes boarding from a vacant house owned by the City of Milwaukee. Gaillard owns WHIRE Electric, where he has trained and hired unemployed and formerly incarcerated people since 2002.
'Making Milwaukee a better place.' Community activists, officials tackle scourge of faulty wiring endangering city renters
This story was republished on Jan. 4, 2022 to make it free for all readers As suspected electrical fires continue to ravage rental homes in Milwaukee’s most impoverished neighborhoods, elected leaders and community activists are advancing solutions such as restoring inspections, requiring landlords to carry insurance and educating the public on the dangers of faulty electrical systems.
5 Things I’m Excited to Experience in Canada
The opinions expressed in this article are the writer’s own and do not reflect the views of Her Campus. Last fall, I transferred from my local college in Asia to the University of Windsor. Thanks to the pandemic, I never got to go there since classes were online and the borders were closed. Up until now, I’ve been waiting to see when classes would be in-person again and for me to have the opportunity to actually stay in the country I’m studying at.
My High School Regrets
The opinions expressed in this article are the writer’s own and do not reflect the views of Her Campus. In June 2018, I graduated from high school and never looked back. Well, I did go back once to visit my old teachers, but I generally don’t think much about my high school days. A part of it is because I barely remember my time in high school; another part was that I definitely didn’t peak in high school, so looking back at those times makes me feel bad about younger me.
The Best Types, Countries, and Brands
Which olive oil is the best? That depends, but we’ll help break it down. The only thing more overwhelming than choosing a wine might be choosing the right olive oil. These days, most supermarkets have shelves stocked with the stuff. There are “grassy” olive oils and organics, cold-pressed and “pure” ones, not to mention all of the countries of origin to consider.

The 3 Biggest Mishaps I’ve Gone Through During Online Classes
The opinions expressed in this article are the writer’s own and do not reflect the views of Her Campus. With the economy and national borders slowly opening up all over the world, I was finally able to get my student VISA after a year-long wait. My university also announced that the upcoming winter semester would mostly consist of in-person classes or a hybrid of face-to-face and online. Bottom line is, I would finally be coming to Canada after almost 2 years of distance learning.
Republicans release redistricting map that maintains their decisive control of Assembly districts, most congressional seats
MADISON – Republicans who control the Legislature would maintain a large advantage in Assembly races under a redistricting plan they made public late Wednesday. The release of their proposed congressional and legislative maps propelled the state's redistricting fight into the next stage. States must draw new maps every 10 years using census data to ensure districts have equal populations. Where the lines go can give one political party a big advantage over the other for a decade.
Electrical fires hit Black renters hardest. Nobody is held accountable.
Behind the walls of most every home, a powerful energy force snakes through ceilings and down floorboards, traveling close to the speed of light. It zips through wires to outlets and into cords that power cellphones and televisions, air conditioners and furnaces. Out of sight, electricity is hardly noticed — unless it jumps off course, escaping through a frayed wire, loose connection or overheated outlet.

Nearly a quarter of Wisconsinites are fully vaccinated, and health officials are reminding residents that many more are eligible now
Nearly a quarter of people have completed the vaccine series in Wisconsin in a race to beat the troubling new variants taking a foothold in the state, but racial and ethnic disparities in vaccine distribution persist in Wisconsin. The state Department of Health Services reminded the public again on Monday that anybody 16 or older who lives, works or studies in Wisconsin can get vaccinated for free, even without a valid state ID card or health insurance.

Garbage bags as PPE. Infected staff on duty. Residents found unresponsive. Wisconsin nursing homes during the pandemic.
In one of the most comprehensive looks at nursing home safety during the pandemic, a Milwaukee Journal Sentinel investigation has found that 1 in 3 Wisconsin facilities violated coronavirus protocols, including by asking COVID-positive staff to keep working, not screening visitors for symptoms and not isolating infected residents. Even when inspectors were present, employees at several facilities didn't always wear face masks.

Wisconsin Manufacturers & Commerce sued in October to stop the release of the records, arguing that disclosing the names of businesses could "irreparably harm" their reputations.

Wisconsin Manufacturers & Commerce, the state's largest business lobby, sued in October to stop the release of the information to media outlets, arguing that disclosure of the information would "irreparably harm" businesses.

MADISON - Dane County health officials made COVID-19 vaccinations available for prosecutors and their staff weeks ago despite the workers not being eligible for the shots under state guidance until Tuesday. Staff in Dane County District Attorney Ismael Ozanne's office were able to secure vaccines when law enforcement officers became eligible, which began in January.
