Why Storage, Not Age, Determines Hay Quality

Troy Walz When provided with hay more than a year old, it’s common to assume the quality is poorer than hay harvested more recently. While this may be commonly true, the true answer is a bit more complicated. Time alone does not drive hay quality decline — storage conditions do. Age is really a proxy for how long hay has been exposed to moisture, oxygen, and physical handling. Those factors determine whether quality is largely preserved or steadily declines.

Is My Forage Sorghum, Sorghum x Sudangrass, or Sudangrass Safe to Graze?

Courtesy Photo Annual forages like sorghum, sorghum x sudangrass, and sudangrass can accumulate nitrates, which should be evaluated before grazing. However, another potential risk is prussic acid poisoning (cyanide), which can be lethal if ingested. Forage sorghum (also known as cane) and grain sorghum (commonly referred to as milo) pose the greatest risk, with sorghum x sudangrass having a reduced risk, but still a concern.

UNL Extension Annual forages are classified into three types: 1. Cool-season, winter sensitive (spring varieties) 2. Cool-season, winter hardy (winter varieties) 3. Warm-season, summer annuals Annual forages can provide rapid growth and high production with limited amounts of moisture as long as the moisture is timely. Under irrigation, annual forages provide more reliable forage production. Annual forages offer great flexibility for managing forage supplies.
