Anime & Juneteenth / Pride: A 5th Look At Characters
Hello, and welcome to another entry into my column on black anime characters. This time we’ll be focusing on super-powered people, good and evil alike. Like previous entries, we won’t get to them all, and that’s a good thing, honestly, as more melanated characters are being created in anime each year. Though more often than in prior times, I grant you.
Anime & Black History Month: A 4th Look At Characters
Hey folks. Welcome to my latest article focusing on black anime characters, past and present, during Black History Month. I’ve been writing these to showcase such characters that fans can research for their own purposes, be it cosplay, fanfic writing, video game creation or just general knowledge. There aren’t any rankings or such, just a chance to share knowledge among fellow fans who might like to see someone who mirrors them on screen.

What They Say: A set that includes 4K UltraHD Blu-ray and Blu-ray for the film “The Super Dimension Fortress Macross: Do You Remember Love?”.
Macross Plus Ultimate Edition Blu-ray Anime Review
What They Say: From the minds of vision creator Shoji Kawamori and co-director Shinichiro Watanabe, and featuring renowned composer Yoko Kanno, MACROSS PLUS assembles the dream team for a thrilling piece of animation history! In the year 2040, on the distant planet Eden, former childhood friends Isamu Dyson and Guld Bowman find themselves pitted against each other as test pilots of rival teams in a competition to decide the next generation of variable mecha fighters.
Twenty Years Later: Phoenix Anime Series
This installment of the Ten Years Later series is a personally fond one for me to reminisce on. I’ll be focusing on the TV series Hi No Tori, known in the US as The Phoenix. It’s an anime adaptation of the story by “The God Of Manga” Osamu Tezuka. A former medical student turned comic creator, Tezuka revolutionized the methods by which both manga and anime were produced in Japan for more efficiency and better quality.
FSU football's Darius Washington ruled out vs. Miami; Jacob Rizy makes starting debut
Florida State football has struggled to find a stable starting five on the offensive line. At Miami on Saturday night, FSU will make its seventh lineup change on the front five in eight games. Robert Scott Jr., Jacob Rizy, Maurice Smith, Jaylen Early, and Jeremiah Byers are the starting O-line for the Seminoles. During warmups, Darius Washington, a game-time decision, wasn't with the starters even though he suited up. This will be Washington's second game missed this season.
Forty Years Later: Galaxy Express 999 Anime
The Galaxy Express three-9 will take you on a journey, a neverending jour-ney… a journey to the starrrrs! Hey everyone. Although it’s been a few years since the 40-year mark, the first theatrical film of Galaxy Express 999 turned 45 recently and it seemed like a good time to take a look at its history and how the franchise changed space opera forever.
Florida State football: What would a 53-man roster look like? Here's position breakdown
Florida State football's season opener against Georgia Tech is around the corner. What would FSU look like if Head Coach Mike Norvell and his coaching staff put together an NFL-style 53-man roster format to prepare for its Week 0 ACC opponent during the Aer Lingus College Football Classic in Dublin, Ireland? A 53-man roster consists of the starting 11 on offense, defense, and special teams with one backup from each position. Here's our position breakdown.
Anime Expo 2024 Overview
Hey, folks. We visited Anime Expo last month and you’ll find my colleague’s articles on elsewhere on the site and on Fandom Post Radio. Here are a few things I myself got to check out. Viz Wows 1000 Year Blood Fans At AX Bleach Panel Hundreds hit the main events hall at Anime Expo to hear from their favorite soul reapers and learn about impending plans for Bleach: The Thousand Year Blood War.
Thirty Years Later: Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory Anime
1991. Over thirty years ago this was a time of transition to a degree. The era of real robot/war mecha anime was winding down for a time, compared to how many were produced during the 80s. Much like the super robot genre, there weren’t too many new properties being developed. Emphasis was more toward older franchises such as Macross, and Votoms. So we have the Gundam franchise. For some folks, there were questions about how this universe was going to be expanded.
Anime NYC 2023: Wit Studio and Studio Bones
At last year’s Anime NYC, we got to see a lot of cosplay, some very good anime premieres, and a couple of cool industry events as well. For instance, we were fortunate to see an industry panel given by Wit Studio with a subsequent interview to promote their season of The Great Pretender: Razbliuto. Eugene Harng – host Hitoshi Ito – producer George Wada – Studio Wit president/producer Hiro Kaburagi – director and co-writer of Great Pretender Panel ***** *Why is Dorothy the focus of the show?
Awesome Super Robot Anime Shows Worth Revisiting
Hey everyone. Welcome to our little corner of anime discussion. Or if you’re returning, welcome back. At around this time, Studio Trigger is doing a dual release of their revamped Gurren Lagann compilation movies Childhood’s End and The Lights In The Skies Are Stars. Also a fun new mecha anime entitled Brave Bang Bravern has started on Crunchyroll. So we decided to take a look back at the super robot shows we enjoyed the most.
Florida State Offensive Tackle Bless Harris Enters Transfer Portal After Injury
Florida State University (FSU) football player, Bless Harris, has announced his decision to enter the transfer portal. Harris, a redshirt junior offensive tackle, has battled injuries throughout his time at FSU and missed the entire 2022 season due to injury. This departure leaves a gap in the offensive line, but FSU has talented offensive linemen in their recruitment class that could step up in the future.

Anime Expo 2023 Coverage
Hello if you’re reading this. Another Anime Expo has come and gone with tens of thousands of Japanese cartoon fans coming to celebrate their favorite hobby. I managed to hit a good number of panels that weekend (and thankfully avoid the fire marshals when they stopped letting folks enter a couple of times). There really was a lot to take in so let’s get to it. Season two of Hidive’s popular series was previewed here.
Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania Review
Why I liked Ant-Man and Wasp: Quantumania Hey, folks. So yeah, I’m clearing ambiguity right off the bat. I enjoyed this flick. It had many things I wanted in an MCU movie, both as a film fan and a longtime Marvel comics reader. I didn’t know all of the histories of the characters before watching it, mind you, but I knew enough to enjoy it and have the desire to research some characters afterward.
Project A-ko: Perfect Edition Blu-ray Anime Review
What They Say: Project A-ko Blu-ray is an anime film directed by Katsuhiko Nishijima. FOR THESE THREE HIGH-SCHOOL STUDENTS REPELLING AN ALIEN INVASION IS AS EASY AS A-B-C! On a splendid morning, an effervescently cheerful teenaged schoolgirl named A-ko sets off for school with her delightfully ditzy friend, C-ko.

Hello, everyone. Welcome to part 2 of the Animation Is Film article. If you haven’t read part 1 yet, here it is. https://www.fandompost.com/2021/11/18/animation-is-film-2021-part-1/ Caught up? Good. Now on to more movies! I Am What I Am (China) This was an interesting look at the world of competitive Lion Dancing and the traditions built into it. Animation Is Film 2021: Part 1
Recently I headed to Hollywood, CA for the 4th annual Animation Is Film Festival. At the TCL Chinese Theater/ It was quite an experience seeing animation fans get together between showings just to talk about technique and direction for the different films. I’ve either worked or covered anime conventions for many years now but it’s a bit different doing such an event like this dedicated strictly to the works themselves and not the peripheral elements.

Anime & Black History Month: A 3rd Look At Characters
Hello everyone. Here’s the third installment of #FebruaryBlackAnime characters for Black History Month. I hope you’ve enjoyed so far. Let’s get to it. Nineteen-ninety (1990) was an interesting year for Studio Gainax. They’d established themselves as an incredibly talented group with Wings of Honneamise and Aim For The Top Gunbuster under their bet. So they turned to television and years before broadcasting Neon Genesis Evangelion and FLCL, they presented Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water.
Anime & Black History Month: A 2nd Look At Characters
Hey folks. Welcome back to February Black Anime. Ready for more characters to talk about? Good. Let’s get to it. We’re gonna hit up the world of classic sci-fi. Our first for this entry has been around a long time and is part of a long-time staple of Japanese animation and manga.
Anime & Black History Month: A Look At Characters
Hey folks. As many of you likely know, February is Black History Month. So I decided to create a column dedicated to anime characters in that vein. Some of them you will no doubt be familiar with. Others will be ones lost to anime fandom history or possibly not really known in the U.S. due to lack of any viable release or TV broadcast.
Kimagure Orange Road Creator Izumi Matsumoto Dies at 61
Kimagure Orange Road Creator Izumi Matsumoto Dies at 61 by Matt Schley October 12, 2020 Izumi Matsumoto, the creator of lauded manga Kimagure Orange Road, died on October 6, it was reported today. He was 61 years old. Matsumoto had been diagnosed with cerebrospinal fluid hypovolemia, a condition that occurs when the body’s cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is in a “reduced state,” and spinal stenosis, a narrowing of the spaces within the spine that can put pressure on spinal nerves.
Kimagure Orange Road's Izumi Matsumoto
Interview: Kimagure Orange Road’s Izumi Matsumoto by Darius Washington December 3, 2012 Translation by Rika Everett Since its debut in 1987, anime fans have enjoyed the adaptation of writer Izumi Matsumoto’s manga, Kimagure Orange Road. This story contains elements of romance, drama and the supernatural as it focuses on a teenage love triangle. Our initial protagonist, Kyosuke, is a young man with some interesting psychic powers, which also run in his rather extensive family.
Manga Marksman: Golgo 13
Manga Marksman: Golgo 13 by Darius Washington August 18, 2010 Originally created by Takao Saito, the world of Golgo 13 is a harsh one grounded in the very real arenas of government politics, brutal crime, sex and intrigue. Despite many helpings of action, most of the stories focus on people who may fear G13’s existence or presence in town.
Thirty Years Later: Mobile Suit Gundam - Char’s Counterattack (with words from Yoshiyuki Tomino)
It’s been several days since I got to watch Char’s Counterattack in an American theater as part of the 40th Anniversary of Mobile Suit Gundam. I’m still processing the experience. I mean I’ve had it on various home formats in the many years I’ve been collecting anime. But this was indeed different. I actually got to have a mainstream movie experience with other paying moviegoers and longtime friends.
Area 88 Complete Collection OVA DVD Review (2018 Edition)
Flying The Blue Skies of Betrayal What They Say: A classic tale of love, war and tragedy comes to life in the original fast-paced emotionally charged thrill ride Area 88. In a cruel twist of fate, talented young pilot Shin Kazama is tricked into serving as a mercenary for Area 88: A hell on Earth where men survive by gunning down anyone who stands in their way. To return home, Shin must sell his soul to the battlefield and pave his way back to Japan with the corpses of his fallen opponents.
Thirty Years Later: Goku: Midnight Eye Anime
Ah, the 80s… ‘Twas a fun time as a fan of both animation and science fiction. There was a heavy focus in the anime scene toward mecha, futuristic themes and attempting to skirt nudity rules for productions as often as possible. With the onset of the OAV (Original Animated Video) format, works were created directly for home video instead of TV broadcast or theatrical release.
Thirty Years Later: Wings of Honneamise
Actually, this one was made 32 years earlier but I had too much research on this story of how good can come from failure. So, in that vein, it’s time for the way back machine to celebrate a little history. Some of you reading this are relatively new to the anime hobby, having hopped into fandoms such as Kill La Kill and Gurren Lagann, either via streams or watching shows on Toonami.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Review
I’m sitting here processing my own feelings after watching this film recently. I’m pretty much a lifelong Star Wars fan and sci-fi fan in general. Sometimes I go for just the spectacle of space battles, others I go in for character development while folks on the big screen face fantastic concepts. Occasionally, though… there’s a really good balance between these elements, which is why The Empire Strikes Back has remained in critics’ and fans’ favorite lists for so many years.
Robot Carnival Collector's Edition Blu-ray Review
What They Say: A collection of art, animation & robots for the first time in High-Definition. Macross: Flashback 2012 - Thirty Years Later
The 1980s were interesting years for anime. They were the height of the real robot era in which we saw serious sci-fi shows with mecha being used for war and general transport. One of the most successful was Super Dimension Fortress Macross, a 1982 TV show from Studio Nue, Tatsunoko and Artland which was later imported by Harmony Gold to the U.S. and rewritten as the initial story of the Robotech series.
Arcadia Of My Youth Blu-ray Anime Review
What They Say: At the end of the journey, all men think their youth was Arcadia. From the mind of the legendary Leiji Matsumoto, as directed by Tomoharu Katsumata. Returning to Earth from the front lines of an interstellar war, Captain Harlock finds that his home is no longer what he once knew. The Illumidus Empire, aliens from another world, have occupied the planet and oppressed its people.
Thirty Years Later: They Were 11 Anime Movie
Greetings, and welcome to academia hell, anime style. Now you may be used to such a concept to a degree after watching one of the many high school teen dramas that have dominated the anime industry in recent years, but I guarantee it’s never been played out the way it is in the OAV film They Were 11. Based on the manga by Moto Hagio, They Were 11 focuses on young Tada, a teenage boy in the distant future who joins 10 other people from various races aboard a derelict spaceship.
Thirty Years Later: Megazone 23 Part II Anime OAV
Wow… I have to say writing this article makes me severely nostalgic. When I saw Megazone 23 Part II in the listing for potential entries to the Thirty Years Later section, it made me realize just how long I’ve been an anime fan. I saw a version of this video a couple years after the initial release which I’ll elaborate on a bit later. As you’ve no doubt noticed, here, this article is about a sequel movie. So I’ll give folks reading who may be unfamiliar with Part 1 a crash course on things.
Black Jack: The Movie Blu-Ray Anime Review
What They Say: Black Jack is a master surgeon who possesses impeccable skills, enabling him to perform operations that are impossible for even the finest surgeons. He is a man alone and full of mystery, appearing in operating rooms to fulfill his tasks, while charging millions for his secret operations.
Hellsing Ultimate: Ten Years Later
I still remember the early 2000s when I would hang out with folks at a friend’s Monday night anime meetup in Kennesaw, GA. We alternated several titles in that period, and one was interesting enough initially: the TV adaptation of Kouta Hirano’s manga, Hellsing.
Science Ninja Team Gatchaman: A Complex International History
Science Ninja Team Gatchaman is a franchise that has expanded greatly since the original TV series debuted in 1972. It’s had a complicated history reaching out from Japan onto U S. shores. Some of you who’ve clicked on this article have likely only seen it as Battle of the Planets when you were kids. Others of you might’ve seen these characters in bird outfits while playing one of the Tatsunoko Vs Capcom fighting games on the Nintendo Wii.
Bubblegum Crisis Ultimate Edition Blu-ray Anime Review
What They Say: The groundbreaking anime series, subtitled in English and French and dubbed in English, released on Blu-Ray with a boatload of extras! The Review: Audio: The audio comes out pretty strong for the Japanese track. The English track is a bit softer, even during the dubbed songs, but both play out pretty well in the audio systems.
Ten Years Later: Samurai 7 Anime Series
It’s been 10 years since Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai was re-imagined for modern television audiences as an animated sci-fi drama with some steampunk styling. This is the tale of Samurai 7. The show was done as an adaptation with a lot of differences from the 1954 film. In this world, people live a simple agrarian lifestyle while warriors became samurai and established great houses to fight for.
Ten Years Later: Space Symphony Maetel Anime Series
This is a two part addition to the Ten Years Later series. To begin with, Maetel Legend is a 2-part OAV from 2000 that was designed to add to a vast mythos created by anime and manga maker Leiji Matsumoto. The groundwork was laid in the late 70s when the TV shows Space Pirate Captain Harlock and Galaxy Express 999 were produced. Soon after in the early 80s two GE999 films were created as was an origin story for Captain Harlock entitled Arcadia of My Youth, with a subsequent TV show as well.
Ten Years Later: Phoenix Anime Series
This installment of the Ten Years Later series is a personally fond one for me to reminisce on. I’ll be focusing on the TV series Hi No Tori, known in the US as The Phoenix. It’s an anime adaptation of story by “The God Of Manga” Osamu Tezuka. A former medical student turned comic creator, Tezuka revolutionized the methods for which both manga and anime were produced in Japan for more efficiency and better quality.
Rollin' with The Crushers
Rollin’ with The Crushers by Darius Washington March 24, 2011 As Right Stuf has just finished releasing the last anime in the Dirty Pair universe from the ’80s needing R1 distribution (namely Dirty Pair TV Collection 2), we thought it was time to look back at its sister series, Crusher Joe, which has been animated as one film and two OVAs (Original Video Animation distributed for home release).
