NASCAR's 'Young Stars' tired of blame for sport's woes
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — It was the finish NASCAR banked on as the genesis of its ballyhooed youth movement. Austin Dillon and Darrell Wallace Jr. finished 1-2 in the Daytona 500, a promising pair of 20-somethings behind the wheel of iconic car numbers that could excite old-school fans, yet a pair with enough social media savvy that might attract millennials to a sport in dire need of a spark.

Darrell Wallace moves to RPM, in his own words | NASCAR.com
There’s just so much history behind it. But beyond that, it’s a family. Ever since I got the call that I was going to drive the No. 43 for Richard Petty Motorsports in 2018, it’s been totally different than any other team I’ve been with. Brian Moffitt is the CEO, and he’s Richard Petty’s son-in-law, and his daughter Rebecca helps run the deal — and I’ve already met their kids. Pretty much everybody at RPM is a Petty and I’m loving it. Even my girlfriend Amanda got to witness that dynamic.

All I’ve done for the last 15 years is race — and when that gets pulled out from under you, it’s scary as hell. It started when Roush Fenway Racing told me it would no longer run my No. 6 XFINITY Ford, leaving me without a ride for the rest of the 2017 season. I’m not like normal 23-year-olds; I’ve got a mortgage on my house, a car payment and a K-12 education. Racing is the way I make a living.

He drives well. He gets along with everybody on the team. The kid is competitive and when he gets out of the race car, he’s completely productive in the way he wants to treat myself and everybody on the team to try and get better.
