Introduction The amount of plastic produced worldwide has steadily increased with 8.3 billion tons of plastic products produced over the past 50 years [1]. Furthermore, nearly 1.6 million tons of plastic waste will be generated globally every day from 2020 to 2022 during the COVID-19 pandemic [2]. Most plastics cannot be reused, and only 6–26 % of recycled plastics can be used in production after physicochemical processing [3].
