The Missing Line Item in Most Retirement Plans

By Dave Buck | April 28, 2026 Linkedin X Facebook Email Getty Images / Unsplash The church I attend ran out of seating in its fellowship hall after worship service, so I grabbed a piece of cake and moved to the side of the hall, where I found a spot for my drink on the windowsill. Importantly, six of our eight events are focused on the arts.
Recognizing Native American Heritage Month
Friends, at Tuesday night’s Webster Groves City Council meeting, our mayor read a proclamation for Native American Heritage Month — very positive and appropriate. Interestingly, no Native Americans were in attendance to receive the proclamation. For me, there was the unspoken and rest of this story. My mom was born and grew up in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma (now Tulsa’s biggest suburb). This was originally Muscogee Creek Tribe country.
Sixth Annual Porchfest: Music As A Path To Peace
In a world torn by division and conflict, I join my fellow Webster Groves music lovers in the belief that there is no other force in the world like music that can lift people up and bring people together in true community, joy, fun and peace! As such, music is a path to peace, just as Webster’s 6th annual Porchfest gloriously demonstrated this last Sunday. It was a perfect confluence of ...
What’s Your Retired Clients’ ‘Why’?
Editor’s note: Dave Buck is a longtime columnist with Rethinking65. Read more of his articles here. At the end of a long trade-show day, I went out to dinner with three other associates. We began to talk about retirement and what life might be like post-career. As the meal was being served, one of my colleagues blurted, “My Uncle Nick is crazy.” Amused, I asked the obvious: “Why?” Janet, who is in her late thirties, gave more details. “He’s in this weird cycle.
3 Ways to Close the Generational Loyalty Gap
Editor’s note: Dave Buck is a longtime columnist with Rethinking65. Read more of his articles here. My mom collaborated with a financial advisor for close to 20 years. When he retired, a much younger wealth manager, John, assumed responsibility for her portfolio. It did not seem like a good fit, so she moved her funds to another institution with a more “mature” advisor — someone older with more experience. Yet after about a year, my mom felt she had made a mistake.
Why Robo-Advisors Will Never Replace Emotional Intelligence
Editor’s note: Dave Buck is a longtime columnist with Rethinking65. Read more of his articles here. I’ve embraced artificial intelligence. It is creating more and more opportunities for me to complete projects and tasks faster. However, with the excitement of the process, it is easy to be lulled into seeing an AI platform as a solver of all your problems.
Pre-retirees Are Confused, Not Committed
Editor’s note: Dave Buck is a longtime columnist with Rethinking65. Read more of his articles here. Florence, or Flo to her friends, avoided the discussion of retirement. Divorced and in her early sixties, she knew she should have been thinking about post-career life, yet she kept putting it off. It wasn’t the idea of no longer being employed that scared her; the steps required to make a more flexible lifestyle sustainable caused her hesitation.
Why Help Your Clients Maintain Their Social Well-Being?
Editor’s note: Dave Buck is a longtime columnist with Rethinking65. Read more of his articles here. Toward the end of 2024, I went back to “corporate world.” As my wife and I planned out 2025, we saw an opportunity for Susan to focus all her efforts on her non-profit. However, it would require us to have a more predictable income. Therefore, I partially hibernated my consulting business and took a leadership role with a former employer.

Time Abundance and Scarcity Rattle Retirees
Editor’s note: Dave Buck is a longtime columnist with Rethinking65. Read more of his articles here. Tim may not have considered himself retired. To keep himself busy, he had a variety of real estate properties, and he had his own side portfolio of stocks that he enjoyed managing and trading during the day. This afforded Tim a lot of flexibility and the ability to casually fill his time with activities he could prioritize and complete at his leisure. That all changed in the blink of an eye.

Unretirement: A Unique Opportunity to Support Clients
Editor’s note: Dave Buck is a longtime columnist with Rethinking65. Read more of his articles here. I conduct a lot of e-meetings, engaging directly with retirees and financial advisors. I still worry I miss emotional signals through a computer screen versus being in-person. However, that was not the case when I was talking with Warren. Like many wealth managers, he has a diverse set of clients. However, he knows his customer base continues to get older, with more heading into retirement each year.

Why Encourage Clients to Downsize and Declutter?
Editor’s note: Dave Buck is a longtime columnist with Rethinking65. Read more of his articles here. We accumulate a lot of material and digital stuff. Too much. On my drive to church each Sunday, I pass multiple storage facilities where people keep additional possessions they no longer have the room for in their homes. I’ve listened to friends and clients discuss the challenge of having to decide what to do with a parent’s belongings when settling their estate.

Editor’s note: Dave Buck is a longtime columnist for Rethinking65. Read more of his articles here. I have had my emotional ups and downs with Social Security, and I have not even drawn a penny out of the program. I am 60 and have had my wages garnished and paid into the system since my first job at 16. As an economics major in college, I wrote a paper in my senior year on the viability of the entitlement program and concluded it might not be around when I retire.
Webster’s Kindness & Peacefulness In Full Bloom
The opposite of peace is war, and the opposite of kindness is cruelty — Webster has seen its share of both over the years in major issues facing our city. But together, the tide is turning as our community’s inherent kindness and peacefulness are in full bloom. This was joyously the case last Sunday at Webster’s fifth annual outdoor “World Peace Concert” at the wonderful Webster Groves Garden Café, owned by Mandy and Gary Schoenberger.
Ping-Pong Moves Can Improve Retirement Success
Editor’s note: Dave Buck is a longtime columnist Rethinking65. Read more of his articles here. Neighborhood gatherings, both planned and spontaneous, are common in my 55-plus community. Residents bring lawn chairs along with their beverages of choice and snacks and set up in someone’s driveway to enjoy a little fellowship. My wife and I recently grabbed our stuff and joined one of these get-togethers. It was eye-opening. Of those assembled, we were the only ones closer to 55 than 75. We still work.
Hope Returns For Indoor Pool At New Swim Facility
In August 2023, the Webster Groves City Council decided to exclude an indoor pool from Webster’s new water park design. But now that construction of the new aquatic park is about to begin, hope for an indoor pool has returned, beginning with two requests of city council. Add one “line item” on the Destination WG project list timeline to formally schedule a date for city council to reconsider an indoor pool as a permanent addition of the water park. This date currently does not currently exist.

5 Ways to Be an Effective Mentor
Editor’s note: Dave Buck is a longtime columnist for Rethinking65. Read more of his articles here. Our politicians in Washington are old. More than 50% of senators are over the age of 65, and 16 are over 75. Around 20% of House members are over 70, and 36 out of the 436 have passed the 75-year mark. In addition, President Joe Biden is in his 80s, and former President (and candidate again) Donald Trump would be in his 80s in office, should he be reelected.
Six-Step Checklist Helps Build Deeper Client Relationships
Editor’s note: Dave Buck is a longtime columnist for Rethinking65. Read more of his articles here. Imagine you stopped working right now and your relationships with all your clients ended. How much would your interactions with humans decrease? Now, envision your clients getting ready to retire. How will their social interactions similarly be curtailed? I have dealt with one-person operations on up to firms managing billions.
Help Clients Identify Their 'Lifestyle Annuity' First
Editor’s note: Dave Buck is a longtime columist for Rethinking65. Read his other columns here. Clients and prospects can get apprehensive when the phrases “financial strategy” and “creativity” are used in the same sentence. But I have learned in working with financial advisors that a lot of ingenuity goes into crafting the right monetary approach. That creativity is necessary when most people in their 50s have under $60,000 saved for retirement.
In Praise Of Webster Groves’ Amateur Artists
Webster’s second annual “Follow Your heART!” amateur artist show was held on April 20.
Help Clients Break Bad Retirement Habits
Like many people in the insurance industry, George has a lot of retired clients who face tough choices over coverage costs. George and I met for breakfast to better understand each other’s business, but the conversation kept returning to George’s father-in-law, Steve, who also faces tough choices around retirement. In his early 70s, Steve owns a small manufacturing company that produces components for the computer industry.
‘Outsourcing Retirement’ Eases Burden for Clients
As an entrepreneur, I seek automation. When I can enhance my productivity through systems that complete generalized tasks or activities, I am all over that. When automation will not work because it is too complicated, I’ll outsource responsibilities to qualified organizations or people. It all ties back to the value of my time compared to the cost of outsourcing. I’ll bet you are doing some form of the same thing. Well, what about your clients?
Help Retired Clients Become SLACK-ers
I have a neighbor my wife and I affectionately call “The Marching Guy.” Phil is in his late 70s, and come rain or shine, he would complete a brisk walk that looked a lot like marching. Many a morning, we would say, “Hi,” as we passed one another. Then we noticed that Phil was not around, and we did not see him for weeks. Concerned, we wondered what had happened. Then, “The Marching Guy” began to appear, but with a walker, painfully trying to make one loop around our complex.
“Dive In” & Support New Indoor Pool For Webster
In 2022, Webster Groves voters overwhelmingly supported the Prop S bond issue to fund the complete renovation of the aging Moss Field Complex, used year-round and home to the Webster Groves High School football team. On the April 2 ballot this year, many hope the Prop W bond issue is overwhelmingly supported to fund various parks and recreation projects, including the complete replacement of the aging Aquatic Center, highly-used, but open only three months of the year.
Do You Have Enough ‘Retirement Empathy’?
Benjamin started out our conversation with, “I am going to retire in 2024.” “Congratulations!” I enthusiastically stated. Then just silence, no response.
Togetherness Doesn’t Have to Tear Retired Couples Apart
It is easy to smile and chuckle a little bit when you hear comments like these from newly retired couples: “I need to go back to work, my wife and I are driving each other crazy.” “My husband tells me to stop bugging him, he’s retired now and just wants to relax.” “I’m thinking about playing more golf, it keeps me out of the house and out of trouble.” “Now that he is retired, he thinks he can manage me like I was on his team at work.” However, I have learned to not take these statements too...
“Webster Sings” Showcases Amateur Singers
Webster Groves’ second annual “Webster Sings,” the singing talent show held exclusively to celebrate and appreciate our community’s amateur singers, was recently held in the Concert Hall of the Community Music School at Webster University. The show drew an estimated audience of roughly 100 family, friends and neighbors. I wish to thank and recognize: 1. The Community Music School, especially Laura Stoessel, for all of their generosity, hospitality and the use of their magnificent Concert Hall; 2.
Should Clients Take a ‘Gap Year’ Before Retirement?
I was never a fan of the term “gap year.” Typically, it involves suspending education for a semester or a year in between high school and college, or before beginning post graduate education. Students take time to travel or plan out new experiences they feel they will be unable to do in the future. This time is also used to clarify their field of study or career path. After completing his bachelor’s degree, my son decided he was going to take a gap year before starting his master’s.
Dance Of Friendship, Fun & Unity
The first-ever Webster Grooves was created for two reasons: 1) To help bring our community together, and 2) To have fun. And in today’s serious and deadly world of fighting and division that tears us apart, for three magical hours last Saturday night, Webster Grooves provided a needed escape and return to friendship, fun and unity through the positive force and power of music, song and dance.
Porchfest A Song Of Success In South Webster
I wish to sincerely thank and recognize all those who made our fourth annual Porchfest, Webster’s only walkable live music event, this past Sunday such a big success.
The Retirement Your Clients Didn’t Sign Up For
Charlotte has started her retirement life, just not how she expected. After a successful career in consumer products, she finds her early post-career life is filled with time having to take care of her mother, who is in a nursing home. Emma was working, and the plan was for her and her husband to retire in 2025. However, two years ago she had to put her career on hold and become the full-time caregiver for her mom, who moved in with them.
“Perfect Evening” For WG World Peace Concert
It has been said that every act of kindness, acceptance and unity sends out a tiny ripple of hope that, when combined with other ripples, creates a tidal wave of peace that no human force of aggression or opposition can stand against it. This past Saturday, on a perfect evening, our Webster citizens were a shining beacon of hope supporting the fourth free “World Peace Concert” at our live music mecca of the Midwest, the Webster Groves Garden Café, owned and operated by Gary and Mandy Shoenberger.
Reframing the Word ‘Retirement’
I was on a call with a financial services team when the discussion turned toward their clients’ attitudes and feelings about the word “retirement.” One client has a multimillion-dollar portfolio and has been with the firm for years. The lead investment advisor expressed how they could not convince the client that they had enough resources to retire now if they wanted to. I highlighted to the team that their client probably has a negative perception of retirement.
