Spring 2022 Archives | Nieman Reports
In recent years, journalism in Ukraine and other post-Soviet states has been in flux, with editorial independence reliant on foreign entities, funding in constant deficit, and press freedoms wavering. Now, as Russia’s war in Ukraine continues to drag on, the work of journalists in the country has become more urgent — and dangerous — than ever. As civilian deaths mount, journalists, too, have lost their lives reporting on the war’s horrors.

“We probably shouldn’t hire you,” the co-bureau chief said near the end of our interview. I couldn’t argue as she went through the reasons — I was new to the continent and South Africa and didn’t speak any of the local languages. It was the summer of 2009, and I had just moved to Johannesburg, partly to teach multimedia journalism at Wits University and partly to pick up any freelance work I could.

Super Bowl Stadiums: Big Win or Big Loss?
This year's Super Bowl is expected to rake in $210 million in spending from the National Football League (NFL), businesses, visitors and media, which is a considerable cash injection into a local economy. But building a stadium to host the event is not always cheap and while private-public partnerships are supposed to relieve the financial burden, cities don't always get the best deal. Below is a compilation of newest stadiums that hosted the Super Bowl in the past 10 years.

Fatalities have jumped in the past five years, and today, Pakistan ranks among the world’s deadliest nations for the press.
15,000 Crocodiles Escape From South African Farm (Published 2013)
JOHANNESBURG — About 15,000 crocodiles escaped from a South African reptile farm along the border with Botswana, a local newspaper reported Thursday. Driving rains forced the Limpopo River over its banks on Sunday morning near the Rakwena Crocodile Farm. The farm’s owners, fearing that the raging floodwaters would crush the walls of their house, opened the gates, springing the crocodiles, the report said. About half of the reptiles have been captured, with thousands still on the loose.
