Interview

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Walter Burns in "His Girl Friday." Doesn't every guy wish he were Cary Grant? I'm probably more like Lou Grant, though.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

You're a storyteller. Shed light on your subject so others take value from your work. You're showing people what's right -- or what's wrong.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

Not high school, but in college I wrote a weekly humor column.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Be patient and persistent. And be polite. It may seem funny to be snarky but without a point, snark is just malice.

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

I get several that are not in my area (as a wine writer, my scope is narrow), and that tells me the PR person isn't doing basic research.

What's your favorite drink?

My fave wine is usually the one in my glass at any moment. Champagne might be my desert-island wine, though I turn to Pinot Noir when sad.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

In the kitchen. I love to cook, and of course eat. I might also be found in the basement looking at wine, or on the trails with our dogs.
