“We Saw Them When.” Tales Out of School . . . Campus Concerts | Notre Dame Magazine

Notre Dame Magazine — I was first in line at LaFortune on the winter day that tickets went on sale to see Beck and The Roots at Stepan Center on April 8, 1997. Today, both acts are renowned. Beck has won eight Grammy awards. The Roots have secured three Grammys, and their drummer, Questlove, is an Oscar-winning documentarian. These artists are more than their awards, however. They remain vital, continually making new music. In 1997, though, neither success nor longevity was assured for either act.

Following the Yellowlined Road

Belt Magazine — In December 1939, yellow ink flooded Chicago's Southwest Side. Frank Reidy, my paternal grandfather, and his neighbors never saw it coming. Yellowlining—the lesser cousin of federal-government redlining—was a discriminatory force that historians and economists have only begun to explore.

Chicago Reader — Contributed ghostwriting to this piece behind the Arts & Business Council of Chicago byline. For more than a century, Chicago has played an outsize role in shaping music trends worldwide. Much of the credit is due (and often long overdue) to Chicago's Black artists, who formed the city's epicenters of jazz, blues, and gospel, laying the groundwork for rock 'n' roll.
