In 1953, it was a foregone conclusion that Ferrari would win the Le Mans 24hr race. They had the Ferrari 375 with the massively powerful 4.5 litre V12 engine. They also had Alberto Ascari, the world champion, driving for them. Jaguar had the C-type, but it only had a 3.4 litre straight 6 engine. And, instead of a world champion driver, they had Duncan Hamilton and Tony Rolt driving. The final blow was the day before the race, Jaguar were disqualified on a technicality.

The chainsaw was originally invented to help women give birth. Childbirth is always painful, but it used to be a lot worse. Especially if, for example, the baby wouldn’t fit through the mother’s opening. If the baby was too large, or turned the wrong way, the opening had to be widened. This involved cutting away bone and cartilage, and lots of pain. The medical tools of the time were knives, saws, chisels, and mallets.

One of history’s most influential games of football happened in 1966. It was the quarter-final between England and Argentina. The referee was German, Rudolf Kreitlin, and he called a foul against Argentina. The Argentine captain, Antoni Rattin, began yelling at the ref in Spanish. The German referee didn’t speak Spanish and he wasn’t used to being shouted at, so he sent Rattin off. But the Argentine didn’t understand, he didn’t speak German, so he refused to go.
