The EU should forge new trade agreements with economies that are not aligned with the US or China Published Wed, Jul 16, 2025 · 06:00 PM If Europe wants to remain a global player, it must demonstrate that, like China and the US, it can endure short-term economic pain to protect its long-term strategic interests. Europe’s two-front trade war
By David Amiel / PARIS As the US and China wage trade wars against it, the EU finds itself on uncharted terrain. It must now devise battle plans that account for the vast differences — and important similarities — between the two confrontations. The trade war with the US came as something of a shock, although it should not have, given US President Donald Trump’s open hostility toward the EU and fundamental misunderstanding of trade dynamics.

Europe’s Two-Front Trade War
en English Economics The Greek historian Polybius attributed the fall of the Greek city-states to the advancing Roman empire not to a lack of resources, but to outdated political systems, a lack of unity, and complacency. Today, Europe risks becoming ensnared in a “Polybius Trap,” though it can still avoid succumbing to its antagonists, the US and China. New US tariffs: what can Europe do?
The Aargauer Zeitung explains the thinking behind Trump's radical trade policy measures: “The Trump administration is acting based on the following premises: the Bretton Woods treaties and institutions have become a hindrance for the American middle class. The US no longer benefits from them, but is instead being exploited, primarily by the EU, Canada, Mexico, Japan and South Korea. In order to usher in a new 'golden era', this system must therefore be dismantled and replaced by a new one.

Cohort Dynamics and Longitudinal Trends in High School Computer Science Participation
You are already at the latest version Recent research highlights the need for a more systematic examination of how variations in computer science (CS) access, school context, and student composition interact to shape CS participation and pathways over time. This study addresses this gap by analyzing longitudinal data tracking CS course participation among three cohorts of high school students at six large suburban schools in the northeastern United States.

A green economy needs more than subsidies
By David Amiel PARIS – In recent years, many policymakers thought they had found the perfect formula for implementing climate-friendly policies without facing difficult political tradeoffs: massive subsidies. This strategy, often associated with U.S. President Joe Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), has influenced several Western countries.

Paris against excess profits tax for energy companies
A group of members of President Macron's Renaissance parliamentary group defend the government policy in Les Echos: “[Further taxation] would be a grave error. If taxes are too high, companies are unable to invest sufficiently and create jobs. They abandon projects or move them abroad. This is why we firmly believe that corporate taxes should continue to be lowered.
A grassroots antidote to populism
By Ismael Emelien and David Amiel/Paris The political parties that once dominated Western democracies have been shaken to the core. Many have suffered electoral debacles, not least in France, Italy, Greece, the United Kingdom, and elsewhere. Others have changed so radically that only their name remains the same. The Republican Party of US President Donald Trump has little in common with that of former President Ronald Reagan. These developments are similar across the West.

Implications of private debt for euro exit
Is there an easy way out? Private marketable debt and its implications for a Eurozone break-up As the Eurozone crisis lingers on, euro exit is now being debated in ‘core’ as well as ‘periphery’ countries. This column examines the potential costs of euro exit, using France as an example. The authors estimate that 30% of private marketable debt would be redenominated, but since only 36% of revenues would be redenominated, the aggregate currency mismatch is relatively modest.
