Interview

Have you ever used a typewriter?

I wish it wasn't so, but yes. I actually took typing in high school. I hated typing class more than any other class I ever took.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Is there any choice other than Cary Grant as Walter Burns?

What does it mean to be a journalist?

I get paid to question authority. How cool is that?

What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Via email at barstow@nytimes.com. All tips welcomed. Just be to the point.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

No, but I did write a bit for my hometown paper.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

That's like asking who is your favorite child.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Never ignore that little warning bell going off in the back of your brain just as you are about to hit send.
