Juneteenth has a long history in Enid, beginning in the 1970s, when a local group of men who called themselves Super Bowl Brothers met to celebrate their love of football. The founders decided a few years later to turn the gathering into a public a public celebration of Juneteenth, now officially called Juneteenth National Independence Day, a federal holiday that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States.

Large volunteer effort to clear tornado debris

ENID, Okla. - The Enid Volunteer Emergency Response Team will have a large-scale cleanup effort Saturday, May 9, 2026, in agricultural land affected by the April 23 EF4 tornado. The tornado tracked across the southern part of Vance Air Force Base, devastated the Gray Ridge Estates addition in south Enid, then caused more damage along Leona Mitchell and Southgate, as well as other areas of Garfield County. No one was killed, but about 10 people were injured.
