NC Forest Service warns of increased fire danger Original

The North Carolina Forest Service is warning of elevated wildfire risk throughout much of the state, including the Piedmont and High Country. Recent forecasts of high temperatures and less moisture in the air contributed to the new warning. Add plenty of fuel like dry grass and brush on the ground and gusty winds, and you’ve got the perfect recipe for fire to ignite and spread rapidly.

Old Salem hosting reenactment of Emancipation Proclamation

A fully costumed reenactment of the Emancipation Proclamation will take place this Friday, Juneteenth, in Old Salem. On May 21, 1865, at St. Philips Moravian Church in Salem, Chaplain Seth Clark of the Ohio 10th Cavalry declared all enslaved people within rebellious states shall be free. On Friday, Salem Congregation Board of Trustees President Barry Self will reenact that reading. He’ll be accompanied by costumed actors singing hymns from the original program.

Local officials commit to working with new Forsyth Strong coalition Original

More than 500 civic leaders gathered in Winston-Salem on Sunday to launch Forsyth Strong, a new organization focused on tackling issues including housing, education and mental health. The group's inaugural meeting at Emmanuel Baptist Church drew more than 1,000 attendees, according to organizers.
