Following an unusually wet winter, many cricket followers eagerly anticipated, and fully expected, a bright, warm summer. As week three of the Tolchards Devon Cricket League dawned, summer was still to fully show its true colours. Overcast conditions, with the odd bright spell, draped themselves across the county landscape. Frequent heavy showers caused delays and disruptions, with a handful of matches abandoned.

Wins for Paignton and Torquay Kingskerskwell in the Tolchards Devon Cricket League

The Tolchards Devon Cricket League happily sparked into life in the sunshine on Saturday after the decimation of the opening weekend seven days earlier. In the Premier Division, Paignton notched their first win with a workmanlike performance to defeat Cornwood by 83 runs. 234 all out proved more than enough on the day at Queen’s Park. Paignton were 113-6, but a stand of 88 for the seventh wicket between Charlie Ward (50) and Connor Ashworth (52) enabled Paignton to post a defendable score.

Cricket at Cockington is the perfect image of an idyllic English summer

When asked to imagine a classic summer day in Cockington, many people will picture horse and carriage rides, families out for fun, a wedding at the church, and a cricket match on the lawns in front of Cockington Court. The horse and carriages may be a distant memory, but cricket at Cockington still lives on and is back for 2026. Celebrating their tenth anniversary this summer are one of two resident teams, St. Marychurch Old Boys.
