This drug treats myopia. I’m sick of telling patients they can’t have it. (washingtonpost.com) This drug treats myopia. I’m sick of telling patients they can’t have it. By David G. Hunter 2026021012010300 I remember the day I first put on eyeglasses at age 8. Stepping out of the optical shop, I saw individual leaves on trees and blades of grass with shock and wonder — details that had been invisible blurs just moments before because I had developed myopia. That is, I had become nearsighted.

Tax-Smart Retirement Withdrawals: The Fine Art Of Not Giving Uncle Sam Your Lunch Money
Every morning at about 6:47 AM, my 4-year-old daughter’s head pops off the pillow with the same urgent question: “What are we doing today?” I’ll be brutally honest – most mornings I’m just hoping for 30 minutes of uninterrupted coffee time. But she needs that roadmap. She needs to know what’s next. As adults, we often forget we’re wired the same way. You wouldn’t buy a house without seeing the contractor’s blueprint first.

Re: We need a royal commission to save the struggling NHS
Dear Editor The last thing the NHS needs is a Royal Commission both for the reasons Nigel Crisp set out in his 2017 BMJ article but also because we know what the NHS needs to enable it to survive and prosper. Several recent inquiries, including one launched by the BMJ, and reports from all the respected health policy think tanks have set out what needs to happen. There is a broad consensus on the solutions to which a Royal Commission would add little of value.

The Movie Adaptation of ‘Three-Body Problem’ That’s Still Under Lock & Key
The journey of The Three-Body Problem from book to screen was more complex than expected. A Chinese TV adaptation beat Netflix to the punch in bringing the epic saga to life, and a movie was made but never released. A true crime tragedy involving the executive behind the movie adaptation rightfully overshadowed the film not releasing.

The franchise presents a sinister truth of the rich using the event to target the poor, revealing deeper societal issues and contradictions.

What Does “Time is a Flat Circle” Even Mean? Original
True Detective 's "Time is a flat circle" is a reference to Friedrich Nietzsche's concept of eternal recurrence. The phrase has become an online meme used to describe events that repeat themselves. The concept of a "flat circle" is also related to M-theory and the idea of multiple dimensions in theoretical physics. "Time is a flat circle." These five words, uttered in the most recent episode of True Detective: Night Country, call to mind a vivid shared cultural memory.
Re: Tedros calls for a paradigm shift-what next on this political agenda?
Dear Editor Kent Buse is quite correct in stating that some of the ideas proposed by WHO's DG are not new which should not detract from their urgency. But merely repeating them endlessly is not going to make change happen. We know what needs to be done and why to transform health systems into being truly health-focused by adopting whole of government and whole of society approaches. Sadly, however, far too little attention is given to the How question - how to close the know-do gap.

Savid Javid's Legacy
Dear Editor Ingrid Torjesen is far too kind in her assessment of Savid Javid's brief term as Secretary of State for Health ('Savid Javid: A year in the job, what is his legacy?', 8 July 2022). Javid did not inspire and the NHS is all the better for his departure (which of course is not to welcome his successor who may prove as bad if not worse). But Javid has never excelled in any of his ministerial posts (none of which he has held for long) and his brief time at DHSC is no exception.

Re: It is wrong to claim that the public won’t follow covid rules just because the government don’t
Dear Editor I agree with the analysis as far as it goes but there's an elephant in the room that's being ignored. What no one as far as I am aware has explained satisfactorily, other than stating the obvious, is why within the UK, England is an outlier. Is this just another example of English exceptionalism - part of the Global Britain nonsense peddled by an increasingly discredited government?
