Of the four compartments that make up a tiffin, the one that houses the roti is most critical. That compartment shares the space with a daily note, one originally intended for Ila’s enigmatic husband. The note fell into the hands of record keeper Saajan, who lives for every correspondence and deliciousness from Ila’s humble kitchen and profound pen. What began as a mistake by the always reliable dabbawalas and their ability to deliver thousands of daily meals became a mistake laden with hope.

There was a time not too long ago when Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “The Phantom of the Opera” showed serious tread on its tires. That’s not necessarily a sleight to the show itself. The Broadway production ran for a record-breaking 35 years at the Majestic Theatre in New York before closing in April 2023. Closer to home, an open-ended production ran for just over five years in San Francisco, kicking off in 1993. It seems all but guaranteed that no theater production will ever match that kind of longevity.

Artificial intelligence and unforgiving humanity are strange bedfellows. In Lauren Gunderson’s AI thriller “anthropology,” penned a few years before our current morass of digital deep-fake infiltration, there are elements of the story which make the march towards a quotidian artificial zeitgeist downright scary. City Lights Theater Company’s production of Gunderson’s 2023 play gets a lot right, despite moments in the middle third that tend to lull more than crackle.
