Opioid prescribing in Canada: a continued retreat from God’s own medicine

Key points Rates of opioid prescribing in Canada are declining, according to new research. Laypeople and clinicians alike often view opioids as the analgesic gold standard, even though rigorous studies show nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs to be as good or better at treating both acute and chronic pain. Many of the harms of opioids are easily overlooked and can intensify with continued therapy and dose escalation.
