Reply to ‘Boundary issues for multidimensional frameworks of representation’
We thank Overgaard and Kirkeby-Hinrup for examining the boundaries on the conceptual dimensions of representation developed in our Perspective (Pohl, S. et al. Clarifying the conceptual dimensions of representation in neuroscience. Nat. Rev. Neurosci. 27, 357–372 (2026))1; prompted by their questions (Overgaard, M. & Kirkeby-Hinrup, A. Boundary issues for multidimensional frameworks of representation. Nat. Rev. Neurosci.
Clarifying the conceptual dimensions of representation in neuroscience
Abstract Despite the centrality of the notion of representation in neuroscience, the field lacks a unified framework for the concepts used to characterize representation, leading to disparate use of both terminology and the measures associated with it. To offer clarification, we propose a core set of conceptual dimensions that characterize representations in neuroscience.
Theory Change in Cognitive Neurobiology: The Case of the Orbitofrontal Cortex
1 Introduction How do theories change in cognitive neuroscience? In this essay, I will examine the nature of theorizing in cognitive neurobiology, the study and explanation of cognitive phenomena in terms of the activity of single neurons and neural populations. I focus on theories of cognitive functions for the cortex. A theory is a set of general principles that explains a body of evidence, provides understanding, and helps make predictions (Winther 2021).
