'Hard to stop' warning as worker stole 200 laptops from Midlands council

Routine audits have been implemented at a Midlands council after a worker was able to steal more than 200 laptops before being caught. The thefts occurred at Coventry City Council in 2022, but the saga continued until July last year when the shamed employee was handed a suspended prison sentence and sacked. The incident was one of two fraud instances spotlighted at this week's council audit and procurement committee meeting.

A West Midlands council is to be urged to give workers an extra day off a week in a bid to make savings and improve staff morale. Cllr Grace Lewis is encouraging Coventry City Council to consider moving to a four-day week, taking inspiration from waste services where employees already enjoy a shorter working schedule.
