Take & Read: New titles in Global Christianity
The Charismatic Gymnasium: Breath, Media, and Religious Revivalism in Contemporary Brazil By Maria José de Abreu Duke University Press This is not the first book to discuss Brazil’s Catholic charismatic renewal, but it is assuredly the first to apply this particular approach. Working from the concept of pneuma, which connotes both breath and spirit, Maria José de Abreu studies the role of breathing human bodies in the culture and theology of pneumatic, Spirit-based faith.
Letters: Hatred and its history part of a narrative whole that should be taught in schools
Rep. Valarie Hodges’ praiseworthy if micromanaged attempt to mandate teaching the Holocaust and World War II in Louisiana high schools faced some pushback in the form of proposed amendments from Black and women legislators to add content regarding these groups. These amendments failed in the House. In my view, all three approaches are incomplete.
Letters: End this exemption, and show the world we mean business about schools
Columnist Garey Forster has been reminding us of Louisiana’s disadvantages compared to other states as measured by such things as outmigration of younger people, especially in middle- and upper-income taxpayers. He claims that the workforce of today is mobile and goes to states that offer better job prospects and tax advantages. He writes, “Louisiana … can no longer rely on oil and gas resources or hospitality to sustain its economy.
Letters: We are all guilty? Speak for yourself, not collectively
Professor Max Reichard’s well-intentioned letter of June 13 raised an alarm-bell for me. When he writes, “we, all of us white people, are the woman in Central Park. We are all Drew Brees,” he crosses a line into the realm of collective guilt. I am the son of a Hungarian Jew who immigrated to the U.S. in 1924 to escape anti-Semitism. I spent much of my career studying and teaching German history, where anti-Semitism raised its destructive head.
Letters: Here's the real breakdown on Louisiana's tax burden
As one would expect, much of the rhetoric in the current election campaigns swirls around the subject of taxes. Since few people enjoy paying taxes, much of that rhetoric is predictably negative, claiming that our taxes are too high. In this regard, it is worth asking how our tax rates compare with those in other states. Fortunately, there is a personal finance website called WalletHub that makes these comparisons.
Letters: Williams' column about guns off base
Walter Williams’ statement in his June 8 column that “guns haven’t changed” is demonstrably false, given the development of small arms technology that has been part of the ongoing Industrial Revolution. When the Second Amendment was adopted in 1791, most guns allowed the user to fire only a single shot before reloading.Things sped up with the invention of the Colt revolver in 1835, whose rotating barrel allowed for five shots in quick succession.
