Offroad Trucks Australia celebrates major milestone
Three decades after Larry Gill brought Tatra down under, daughter Amber is driving the off-road specialist into an exciting new era. The person Larry Gill passed away four years ago but his legacy lives on with daughter Amber at the helm. Image: OTA It was 1996 and Larry Gill was on a break from valuing mining equipment when a work colleague handed him a magazine. There was a story on Skoda and Czech engineering but alongside was a short piece that grabbed his attention.
Braking systems: use the free ones first
[In the third instalment of our monthly fuel-saving series, Fuel Smart, our resident expert highlights the payoffs of using your truck’s braking systems as a ladder.] So, how did you go this month? Did you find yourself backing off a bit more and easing off the torque as you approached hill crests? Hopefully by now you’re starting to discover something that the best drivers have known for years. Saving fuel isn’t about one big trick.

Fuel Smart series: Speed adaptation and throttle control
In the second instalment of our monthly fuel saving series below, our expert truck tester debunks the myth that driving faster gets the job done quicker. So, how did you go on last month’s challenge – reducing the number of times you stop? Let us know . . . One of the biggest myths in road transport is that driving faster gets the job done significantly quicker. In reality, it often gets the fuel bill up much faster than it gets the truck to its destination.

Stay calm & don’t give in to bass instincts Original
The first clue something was wrong aboard Cunardâs shiny new Queen Anne wasnât visual. It wasnât a cracked window, a leaking tap or an overflowing buffet tray. It was a bass drum. Or rather, the relentless thump of one. My wife and I had boarded in Singapore for what was supposed to be a long-awaited, restorative cruise to Sydney aboard Cunardâs newest Queen.

Sweet aroma of a Ferrari Roma Spider Original
Ferrari’s Roma Spider, the soft-top form of the brand’s entry-level convertible, is a bit of a blast from the past. It was back in 1969 that the previous front-engined, rear-wheel-drive Ferrari soft-top was released, the legendary 365 “Daytona” Spider. But Roma is a far cry from those halcyon days when Ferrari owners loudly praised their car’s spectacular styling and performance but quietly grumbled about frequent and repeated visits to service centres.
Unveiling the new Phoenix and Force
The release of Tatra’s Phoenix was the beginning of a surge of interest in a brand that had operated largely in the shadows of the big European manufacturers. Distributed in Australia by Off Road Trucks Australia (OTA), the company earned most of its stripes supplying European military forces and as a result, its general-purpose trucks carried the same extreme-duty driveline and were aimed squarely at the heavy-duty off-road market. Styling-wise Tatra has never been known as a front runner.

Hello out there! I'm just starting the journey of fermenting my own alcoholic drinks. So far, it has been fun and rewarding, and I hope that eventually it will be cost effective! So far, I have made a Sauvignon Blanc from a kit, blackberry wine, grape wine, and a spiced ginger beer. My friend has hop bines, so I expect brewing beer beer is coming soon, but the equipment is a little more involved.
Centurion marks milestone with launch of second Perth site

'Father' of Volvo in Australia reflects on stellar career
Max Winkless left school at 13, was working as a truck driver’s ‘boy’ or offsider at 14, and after observing how each driver handled the steering, clutch and gears on a fleet of old Leyland Albions figured it wasn’t all that hard. By 15 and after a couple of opportunities at standing in for drivers, his boss told him if he had his licence he could work as a driver. The next day the driver he was assisting took him to the police station.

Internationally-acclaimed Indigenous artist Richard Bells latest Pay the rent! installation at the Tate Modern in London goes to the heart of some of the intractable problems of Australian white settlement. The notion that rent is owed challenges the legitimacy of the claim by the British crown to own Australia, since no treaty was ever made with the Indigenous people, who rightly insist they never ceded their land.
The evolution of inharmonicity and noisiness in contemporary popular music
Abstract Much of Western classical music relies on instruments based on acoustic resonance, which produce harmonic or quasi-harmonic sounds. In contrast, since the mid-twentieth century, popular music has increasingly been produced in recording studios, where it is not bound by the constraints of harmonic sounds. In this study, we use modified MPEG-7 features to explore and characterise the evolution of noise and inharmonicity in popular music since 1961.

Tatra’s massive new digs are future proof
Two and a half years after Offroad Trucks Australia founder Larry Gill passed away, his legacy dealership has opened its new head office and sales and service facility on a 20,000sqm lot in Forrestdale. Under the direction of Larry’s daughter and managing director Amber Gaden, the local company has doubled the sales volume of the unique Tatra range of heavy-duty off-road trucks into the local and national mining, exploration and construction sector.
Bad boys come good
In September of last year, a new dealership opened its doors on Kewdale Road in Welshpool. Not cars, not trucks and not buses. Instead, tractors and farm machinery. One could ask, what’s the point in selling a range of products that stretch from market garden and forestry equipment right through to massive broadacre farming tractors from a site in the metropolitan area? Dealer principal and part-owner Paul McGovern had a few answers to that question when West Wheels caught up with him recently.
Swedish supplement strengthens Scania in the south
Scania executives from Australia and overseas attended a ground-breaking ceremony for the new Scania dealership premises in Hope Valley, south of Perth. The factory-owned site is within the boundaries of the City of Kwinana, a hub of manufacturing industry and support operations. The new premises shapes up with a workshop/administration block of just under 1400m2, and a parts warehouse of 3500m2, which replaces a temporary warehouse in Welshpool that was stretched to the limits at just 2000m2.
Electric trucks? Yes - But maybe... - Fleet HV News
The momentum of interest in electric trucks has been accelerating for the past three years, however on the ground the results are far from impressive. For example, Iveco delivered just 72 electric trucks in Italy last year – less than half a percent of a dynamic and emissions conscious market. The biggest obstacle is initial cost, however the next one on the list is the real show-stopper. Consider our case study below, which is based on an actual scenario.

Iveco S-Way: S for slick, smooth and silent
For some time now Iveco dealers in Australia have been hanging out for a solution to undeservedly low market share in the heavy-duty sector. Although the X-Way competes favourably with the other European competition in terms of driveability, fuel efficiency and reliability, its spec excluded Iveco from big fleet purchasing programs that required trucks with broader weight capacities. The new S-Way still tops out at 70t GCM, so a full B-double role is its limit.
Impressive dump truck out-muscles WA rivals
If there’s one thing to stay out of the way of, it’s a mining company boss on the hunt for savings – capital and/or operational. The pressure on productivity, cost effectiveness and maximum use of capital is immense, driven in part by the demands of shareholders for ever-increasing returns. That’s why Tatra’s latest import, the thoroughly ripped 62t GVM 10 x 10 Phoenix dump truck has opened some eyes on sites where it is comprehensively outperforming articulated dump-trucks.
Current research and management of undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma/myofibrosarcoma
Introduction Undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma (UPS), once termed as malignant fibrous histiocytoma, is one of the most frequent soft tissue sarcoma (Weiss and Enzinger, 1978; Carneiro et al., 2009). Myxofibrosarcoma (MFS), histologically similar to UPS, was segregated from UPS, and re-classified as an individual entity in 2002 on the ground of its clinic pathology (Hu et al., 2020).

The mirage of research and research expertise: Reflections on leading Horizon Europe bids
INTRODUCTION Funders shape the focus and, increasingly, the approach to and the process by which research is conducted. We both led Horizon Europe bids that were submitted in 2022. During the process of preparing the bid, agreeing on the grant agreement and starting work on the projects, we made some critical reflections on the process. This discussion piece shares our observations about the process, and what we have learnt.
Goldstar AMP-lifies green credentials
Goldstar Transport’s Sean Carren has never been shy of dipping a toe into the future – after the homework has been done that is. But a big part of the homework in transport takes place after the presentation is given, the specs determined, the graphs examined and the promises assessed. It’s done by working a new truck or new technology in real-world commercial conditions, where time waits for no engineer, stylist, or accountant, and customers simply want on-time, on-budget performance.
Test driving the new Kenworth K220 cabover
When you get to drive a pre-production truck you have to expect that some things won’t quite fit, other things don’t quite work, and squeaks, rattles and fizzes haven’t quite been ironed out. That was certainly the case with the new K220 Kenworth I drove from Perth to Coolgardie earlier this month. There were two trucks on the run, an auto with a single trailer and a manual with a ginormous 2.8-metre sleeper, both used for dealer launch demos around the country.
On the road with Hino from Cairns to Townsville
When you’ve been closeted up for a couple of years, and need to spread your wings again, what better way than to take most of your entire range on a road trip? Hino decided to hit the road running following the Covid lockdown era by gathering a dozen trucks in variants across its three series – 300, 500 and 700 – and heading around the country for dealer and customer road tests.
Authentic bikman: Memories of Sir Jacob Luke
IN THE BEGINNING By Robert Iki Leso Luke Luwai, the young woman’s husband, was a Pendend clansman of the major Tit tribe and lived in Yakandak village in the Aumbum Kompiam district of Enga Province. Right in front of Yakandak village is the roaring Ambum River which, joined by tributaries, surges downstream to finally unite with the mighty Sepik River. Luke’s wife, Aipit Lyambian, was originally from a small hill village called Goropip.

Mack Anthem exceeds driver expectations
During a window between WA lockdowns, Mack Trucks brought a posse of trucks across the Nullarbor to showcase new technologies designed to bring the distinctly US truck into a competitive forum with the big Europeans. I hitched a ride with the convoy in Adelaide and steered each of the models at some point during the 2800km drive.
Cabover comfort top of mind in new K220
The Kenworth legacy started to build from its first truck sold in Australia. Back then, the uniquely and clearly American truck set a level of expectation that other brands introduced later would at first imitate, and then try to improve on. The squared-off lunch box shape of the first K-Series that rolled off the line in March 1971 challenged drivers for 40 years, firstly with a set of ‘monkey bars’ that claimed to be access aids.
Kenworth K220 is the ultimate long hauler
The first K-Series Kenworth that rolled off the line in Dandenong in March 1971, a K125CR now in the Kenworth museum, was an honoured guest at the Brisbane release of the latest K-Series, the K220. With all the development of the truck over 41 years, the squared-off lunch box shape of that first K-Series is still discernible.

WA-built 1600km/h jet car aims for supersonic land speed record
Sometime in 2023, after final systems and speed testing, WA’s Rosco McGlashan will sit himself down in front of a massive explosion designed to hurl him down a measured course at 1000mp/h (1609km/h) in pursuit of a supersonic land speed record. His car, designed, engineered and built here in WA, is the Aussie Invader 5R, the latest iteration of the speed demon toys he lives for. Camera IconRosco McGlashan at the blow-through test.
300 Kenworth 909s in 20 seconds!
You could do a lot with nearly 300 Kenworth 909s. Like towing Suncorp Stadium down to the Gold Coast. But compress their combined power and torque into a single mind-boggling blast of speed that is all over in less than half a minute? That’s what WA’s Roscoe McGlashan has packaged together for his latest land speed record attempt.
Four tippers in the one rig as truck body builders power on
While the Australian automotive industry is still licking its wounds from the retreat of vehicle manufacturing, truck body builders are going strong, even growing in scope and volume. Locally, several are quoting lengthy build times for new trailers and truck bodies, especially the specialist equipment that is so much a part of our WA mining-based economy.
