Bank of England's Bailey sees 'quite subdued' second-round price pressures so far
By David Milliken BANGKOK, Oct 16 (Reuters) - Soaring energy prices so far appear to be having limited wider effects on British prices, but it is too soon to draw firm conclusions about how strong such second-round effects will be, Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey said on Friday. Most economists now expect the BoE to start raising rates next month, according to a Reuters poll, after keeping policy on hold since the outbreak of the US-Iran war in February.

Raising bank tax is not best choice for UK budget, IMF says
BANGKOK, Oct 16 (Reuters) - British finance minister John Healey should favour property tax reform, broader sales taxes and better-targeted welfare spending ahead of raising taxes on banks or workers in his annual budget this month, the International Monetary Fund said on Friday. The IMF praised British fiscal policy at its annual meeting in Bangkok this week for reducing borrowing over the past couple of years and for targeting a balanced budget, excluding long-term investment, by 2029/30.

UK's Healey says banks are key to economy but keeps tax options open
BANGKOK, Oct 15 (Reuters) - British finance minister John Healey said banks were central to the country's economic future on Thursday when pressed by reporters about the likelihood of a windfall tax on their bumper profits in his first budget on October 28. Increasing the 3% surcharge for banks on top of standard corporation tax could raise billions of pounds at a time when many lenders have profited from rising interest rates.
