Why do we analyse weather fronts? Today, at the 21st Cyclone Workshop, we had a great discussion about the value of conceptual models in atmospheric science. I introduced a question a student once asked me: “Why do we actually need fronts? Why can’t I just look at forecasts of rain, wind and temperature?” It’s a good question. A useful analogy* is to think of fronts as characters in the weather story. A well-written character is more than just a name.

Take a stand against Trump and support The Nation! In this moment of crisis, we need a unified, progressive opposition to Donald Trump. We’re starting to see one take shape in the streets and at ballot boxes across the country: from New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani’s campaign focused on affordability, to communities protecting their neighbors from ICE, to the senators opposing arms shipments to Israel.

Neutrophil arrest in myocardial capillaries drives hypoxia and impairs diastolic function in a mouse model of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction
Abstract Myocardial blood flow deficits in heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) patients and related animal models have been recognized for decades, but the underlying mechanisms and resulting consequences for HFpEF pathogenesis remain poorly understood. Using intravital cardiac microcopy in a two-hit mouse model of HFpEF, we identified an increased number of neutrophils in capillaries slow moving orstalled, blocking blood flow, as compared to control mice.

Processing: How David Small Illustrated and Wrote The Werewolf at Dusk
On a semi-regular basis, I interview authors about their writing processes and the craft behind their books. You can find previous entries here. This week I’m excited to be talking with the award-winning writer and illustrator , whose recent and excellent illustrated book of dark stories, The Werewolf at Dusk, is a perfect Halloween read for any graphic novel fan. The Werewolf at Dusk is a collection of three eerie tales all illustrated by Small in his expressive and emotive style.
Déjà vu in New Caledonia: why decades of political failure will make this uprising hard to contain
With an air force plane on its way to rescue New Zealanders stranded by the violent uprising in New Caledonia, many familiar with the island’s history are experiencing an unwelcome sense of déjà vu. When I first visited the island territory in 1983, I interviewed Eloi Machoro, general secretary of the largest pro-independence party, L'Union Calédonienne. It was a position he had held since his predecessor, Pierre Declerq, was assassinated less than two years earlier.

The Werewolf at Dusk: And Other Stories
Long celebrated as a modern master of graphic literature, David Small has elicited in his work comparisons to Stan Lee and even Alfred Hitchcock. His internationally acclaimed graphic memoir, Stitches, told the story of a childhood in disarray. Werewolf at Dusk, appearing nearly fifteen years later, turned its attention to the twilight of life and to aging, gracefully or otherwise.
Werewolf at Dusk
This evocative, sure-handed triptych of short stories from Small (Stitches) showcases his talent to conjure foreboding. The title piece, adapted from a story by Lincoln Michel, depicts an aging werewolf who’s now “lucky [to] overtake an injured squirrel.” As isolated as ever, he’s still fearful of the full moon, but for a different reason: —“It used to mean I’d hurt other people.

If it’s possible for America to have a poet laureate, why can’t James McBride be its storyteller-in-chief? McBride follows up his hit novel Deacon King Kong (2020) with another boisterous hymn to community, mercy, and karmic justice. It's June 1972, and the Pennsylvania State Police have some questions concerning a skeleton found at the bottom of an old well in the ramshackle Chicken Hill section of Pottstown that’s been marked for redevelopment.
New plays explore ‘what makes you who you are’
‘Up close and personal’ is pulling us into stories of our collective humanity. Two new plays debut as part of the ongoing DIVAfest initiative to address the issues that concern us as individuals and as a community. Sing along with J.E. Hibbard's historical play with music, Ballad of the Book Women, and celebrate the spirit of self-discovery in Lucy Fields's, The Divine Alchemists. “The 1960s marked an exciting time for individuality and innovation in America,” reads the Hasbro company post.

‘I’m Bored’ and ‘Hello! Hello!’
Sept. 14, 2012 Our brave new quickly expanding technological world has in it less human contact than ever before and less connection with — hence, less caring for — the natural world. Two new picture books explore this (oh, let’s call it a) situation. Both contain an important message for young readers, but neither is burdened by it, as so many “message-y” books have been. “I’m Bored,” by Michael Ian Black, stars a little girl and a potato. As the story begins, the girl tells us she is bored.

Electronic Structures of Rhenium(II) β-Diketiminates Probed by EPR Spectroscopy: Direct Comparison of an Acceptor-Free Complex to Its Dinitrogen, Isocyanide, and Carbon Monoxide Adducts
Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) studies of the rhenium(II) complex Re(η5-Cp)(BDI) (1; BDI = N,N′-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-3,5-dimethyl-β-diketiminate) have revealed that this species reversibly binds N2 in solution: flash frozen toluene solutions of 1 disclose entirely different EPR spectra at 10 K when prepared under N2 versus Ar atmospheres.

Ice-stream demise dynamically conditioned by trough shape and bed strength
Abstract Ice sheet mass loss is currently dominated by fast-flowing glaciers (ice streams) terminating in the ocean as ice shelves and resting on beds below sea level. The factors controlling ice-stream flow and retreat over longer time scales (>100 years), especially the role of three-dimensional bed shape and bed strength, remain major uncertainties.

Weather takes control in Washington dairy country
A devastating, “once-in-a-century” blizzard whose strong winds gusted to 80 miles per hour as it slammed into Washington state’s Yakima Valley in early February killed more than 1,800 cows worth an estimated $4 million at 12-15 dairies. The estimated financial losses do not include milk production impacts. One dairy alone lost 600 cattle averaging $2,000 each. Snowstorms continued to afflict much of Washington state most of February since that blizzard struck late Saturday, Feb.

David Small’s ‘Home After Dark’ a powerful graphic novel about adolescence
The world can be a scary and confusing place for just about any 13-year-old. For Russell Pruitt, the main character of David Small’s gripping new graphic novel Home After Dark, it can be downright terrifying. Small is the illustrator and/or writer of 40 children’s books, with Caldecott honors and medals among his awards for such books as The Gardener and So You Want to Be President?
David Small's Playlist for 'Home After Dark'
Photo credit: Self-portrait I’m always looking for music I can work to during long days in the studio, music that won’t break my focus, won’t pull me this way and that, won’t grab me by the shirtfront and tell me what to think or feel. This quest has, during work hours, landed me squarely in the camp of the Minimalists, but I am also not immune to having my emotions ripped up by selected works of another nature altogether. Here, I’ve mixed them together.

Books That Build Self-Confidence in Kids
by ParentCo. July 13, 2017 What seems so normal within the walls of our house – eating crackers with peanut butter, mayo, and pickle relish, wearing costumes, or using family nick-names – can all be threatened by social norms when our kids go to school or play with friends. When kids are young they don’t think about other people’s opinions, but this slowly changes as they grow.
EMEA Channel Partner Summit: The highlights
As we look ahead to our annual FOCUS Security conference, a three day event that brings together leading cyber security experts from around the world to discuss their security initiatives, I want to reflect briefly on another great Intel Security even that has just passed. Earlier this month, we held our annual EMEA Channel Partner Summit – this year in Mallorca – which gives us the chance to regularly gather with our partners and discuss how we’re going to grow together over the next 12 months.
Celebrating our partners across EMEA
Last week, our EMEA Channel Partner Summit took place in Mallorca. This year’s Summit was a great success and once again highlighted the importance of our partners and the value they bring to Intel Security. It’s been great to catch up with all of our partners and begin planning on how we can make the next twelve months even more successful than the last.
Needing to work with partners to maximise your business
In recent months, there have been some pretty alarming statistics bandied around regarding the cyber threat landscape for businesses. For example, we heard last month that two-thirds of firms in the UK have been hit by a cyber attack in the past year alone – with this figure expected to rise further in the coming years.
