The last time Whistler hosted a BC Optimist Championships (BCOC), it was 2012 and the Whistler Sailing Association (WSA) was a small operation with just three staff members and a modest fleet of 10 dinghies. Indeed, that BCOC was the organization's first major championship. Now, the WSA boasts an armada of 55 boats and employs 20 staff during summer months.

In July of 2010, Tim Livingstone was walking past the Spruce Grove baseball fields when a particular song reached his ears. It would've meant very little to most, for the artist Ian Pooley is an obscure name. For Livingstone, who at that point was a DJ for a local nightclub called Tommy Africa's (now Après Après), it was a beloved track. He walked over and accosted Dave Rollinson, who was blasting the song from a nearby concession stand.
