Korean Beauty Is Booming. My Korean Beauty Brand Is Closing. Original
In the summer of 1997, my sister, my mother, and I locked arms as we walked through Seoul’s Dongdaemun market. We looked like any other Korean family—except my sister and I gave it away with our American swagger in our Tommy Hilfiger zip-ups and Jansport backpacks, pinching our nostrils like clothespins. “What’s that smell?” we whispered, trying not to laugh. I tugged my mother’s sleeve. “Moyah?” The word for “what’s that” slipped out in my American-accented Korean.

Robot metabolism: Toward machines that can grow by consuming other machines
|
Abstract Biological lifeforms can heal, grow, adapt, and reproduce, which are abilities essential for sustained survival and development. In contrast, robots today are primarily monolithic machines with limited ability to self-repair, physically develop, or incorporate material from their environments. While robot minds rapidly evolve new behaviors through artificial intelligence, their bodies remain closed systems, unable to systematically integrate material to grow or heal.

Hunting CVEs in IoT Devices: A Wi-Fi Extender Walkthrough
IoT devices are everywhere, but their security often lags behind. Inspired by the OWASP Firmware Security Testing Guide, I conducted a personal project to hone my IoT penetration testing skills. Using a low-cost Wi-Fi extender, I applied the guide’s methodologies and discovered an authenticated RCE vulnerability. This post details my process, from firmware extraction to vulnerability exploitation.

The usefulness of head computed tomography in patients with known cirrhosis presenting to emergency department with suspected hepatic encephalopathy
Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) is a clinical hallmark of end-stage liver disease (ESLD), characterized by recurrent episodes of confusion, disorientation, and altered mental status (AMS), which often result in frequent visits to the Emergency Department (ED).1–4 Despite its clinical significance, the presenting symptoms of HE are non-specific which can pose a diagnostic challenge for clinicians.4,5 Computed tomography (CT) of the head is often used as a diagnostic tool in patients presenting...

The Ontario Superior Court (ONSC) has dismissed a claim for damages under section 8 of the Patented Medicines (Notice of Compliance) Regulations (the Regulations) brought by Apotex Inc. Here's how Jenny Slate got her Oscars 2023 skin to glow
Jenny Slate is having one of the biggest years in Hollywood. The multi-hyphenate talent – comedian, producer, actress, write, voice-over extraordinaire, among other things – is making her debut as a first-time nominee for the 2023 Oscars. But unlike others who may be nominated for one film, Jenny's going for gold for two: Everything Everywhere All at Once, and Marcel the Shell with Shoes on.
3 Reasons for Vietnam's AI Greatness
Artificial Intelligence Vietnam is a country that is well-known for its thriving tech ecosystem and burgeoning startup scene. Over the past few years, the country has emerged as a major destination for tech talent, particularly in the areas of software development and IT outsourcing. However, there is one area of Vietnam's tech talent that has remained relatively unknown to the outside world - its AI talent.
The Effects of Hosting Mega Sporting Events on Local Stock Markets and Sustainable Growth
Abstract : We examine the economic effects of the Summer and Winter Olympic Games and the FIFA World Cup on the economies of host countries. We found that in the short run, hosting the Olympic Games has a significant positive announcement effect on the host country’s equity market.
3 Signs of Vietnam's Golden Age
Startups and Venture Capital I did it. I moved my entire family out to Ho Chi Minh City ("HCMC" or "Saigon"), Vietnam. Why leave the Bay Area? Some say I'm crazy. But that's because they don't know what I know. Investing in Vietnam is like betting on the hottest NBA rookie of all time. Yes, there were some exciting has-beens, like China. And there are some steady hypes, like India.
Club Q queer community speaks up on LGBTQ shooting in Colorado
“Are you okay?” “Checking in to see if everything’s fine as I just saw the news.” “Let us know if you’re fine.” It’s only 7 a.m., and I unlock my iPhone screen, squinting. I log onto Twitter and find that there’s been yet another mass shooting, this time in my hometown of Colorado Springs, CO. And it’s not just at a random location — it’s the city’s only LGBTQIA+ club, one that’s only three minutes away from my house.

Increasingly, Gen Z has been the center of attention in the beauty world. Both as founders and consumers, chatter has focused on what Gen Zers are bringing into the industry. But, there are a variety of roles that make up the beauty industry, and Gen Z is starting to fill those positions, changing the infrastructure of beauty.
The personalized experience of relating to everyone on the internet
Icebreakers might be some of the worst things to come out of an institution. What’s your favorite show? What’s a fun fact about yourself? What is one thing we would never guess about you? I’ve actually forgotten everything about myself and everything I like, so I won’t be able to answer that question, sorry. I haven’t even decided what fictional character I’m going to base my personality around.
A reflection on Supreme Court decisions and womanhood
[TW: talk of abortion] Note: In this essay, I do not discuss the numerous reasons why abortion should be legal. I’m not capable of saying anything on that matter any better than the people who’ve already spoken and written about it. Additionally, although it has become a politicized issue, we believe that reproductive rights are human rights.
Are glow-ups messing with our heads?
The Internet has been overtaken by the “glow-up.” Across Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube, countless posts show the before and afters of short-term and long-term transformations. The glow-up transcends genre, encompassing content that ranges from organization and productivity to fitness to style. The majority of glow-ups, however, concern personal appearances.
Why are beauty brands raising prices?
At the gas pump and the grocery store. At your favorite retailers and even at the classic $1 pizza joints in New York City. Inflation is everywhere, and not even your makeup bag is safe. Over the last year, numerous beauty brands have been raising their prices — one more industry being impacted by the recent spike in inflation since the start of the pandemic. Naturally, as someone who already has to carefully budget and plan for my current beauty shopping habit, I was more than a little concerned.
My parents' liquor store dreams allowed me to pursue my own at Ulta Beauty
Like many immigrants, my parents moved to America out of necessity. South Korea wasn’t like it is today with its blinding lights, massive pop culture appeal, and multi-trillion dollar beauty industry. It was the 1980s, a time when the country was reckoning with its own stance on democracy, still healing its wounds from a war with the north and finding its way out of mass poverty.
Interview with Heartstopper's Will Gao
I can't help but feel like I was interrupting something important when Will Gao and I met up to talk. He had just finished dining al fresco at an Italian restaurant in London with his friend and mentor, actor Rosalind Chao. I would categorize this as a "big deal," but he seemed laid-back about it all, even briefly introducing me to Rosalind.

From now until the 11th, it is Sephora’s annual VIB sale. Depending on your standing within their loyalty program, you can save anywhere from 10–20% (with code SAVESPRING) on things that you maybe normally would have deemed too fancy or too expensive to splurge on. 11 Female-founded beauty brands you should know about
Starting a company takes determination, guts, and brilliance. It's not something for the fainthearted and often is full of trial, error, self-reflection, and often doubting. As women, the industries we enter are often already pitted against us. Getting boardrooms full of seemingly powerful people to believe in your idea is not something that we're taught in school. We gathered the best advice we could find from women who have done it all firsthand.

MJ Choi's dance history
MJ Choi has spent half her life in Korea and half her life in the states. She came to America in her twenties to study Industrial Design at the University of Bridgeport, Connecticut. Three months into the semester, her dad’s business went bankrupt, forcing her to find a job as a waitress and dishwasher, speaking little to no English. Working 70 hours a week, she would get home worn out with her hands chapped and bleeding.
Listen more than you speak
Last month, it was my friend’s birthday. A small group of us met up in a neighboring Brooklyn neighborhood for pita bread the size of car airbags and fresh pasta that can only be described as “chewy beyond belief.” Later in the evening, before dessert, my friend, Mila* (a queer Asian woman), spoke about a celebrity’s history with anti-Asian and anti-gay remarks. Jess* (a straight white woman) shared that she didn’t have a problem with this celebrity.

How to become a beauty CEO and what you need to know
Today is the first anniversary of our sister skincare brand, good light. I type these words early in the morning – it’s 2:30 a.m. here in New York City – feeling overwhelmed, exhausted, but altogether fulfilled. After all, my dreams came true. But what comes next is what keeps me up at night. I gave Very Good Light another few months and knew it would all be over. The site was on its last legs. It was the summer of 2019, right before the pandemic would change the course of the world.
How to get jelly nails at home
You can't keep a good trend down. Nail fads come and go, but it's apparent that one of them is here to stay— jelly nails. Over the past few years, there have been many iterations on the concept, but they all share a common thread: a sheer translucence rather than fully opaque colors. (Think: stained glass.) When getting jelly nails, you should be able to see the natural composition of your nails, which helps lend to a less-obvious grow out.
Three Black male ballet dancers on masculinity and inclusivity
Ballet is old. Like, really old. At over 500 years old, it is a certifiably old thing. And, as is the case with most old things, it hasn’t always given space to all people. Let me offer a little unsolicited history lesson: Ballet originated during the Italian Renaissance, all the way back in the 15th century. From there, it spread to France, then across the globe, onto Russia, and eventually to the United States in the mid-1800s.
I only learned about white skin in esthetician school
Skin of color education is virtually non-existent in esthetician school. It has been one year since I became an esthetician. After a year with my license, 600 hours of testing, theory, and hands-on practice, I still know very little about BIPOC skin. I attended a predominately BIPOC institution in New Jersey – making me the minority of my cohort.
What it's like to wear orange mascara
American Beauty is a series written by an American beauty writer temporarily marooned in Japan and is in no way affiliated with the actor Thora Birch. Japan is a nation full of gorgeous things. Everywhere you look, there is a mountain you feel compelled to write a poem about, or a pair of jeans you would murder your neighbor to own, underscored by one of the most melodic languages you have ever heard.
Beauty products couples can share
As a hopeless (more like destitute) romantic, I’ll admit I daydreamed about my first long-term relationship—being a cute, out-and-about couple living in an equally cute city. Perhaps we’d be a couple who leisurely strolls through Chelsea galleries on weekends for giggles? Or we’d play hooky to go hang in the park and rename all the dogs that have human-like faces.
Highest rated beauty products on Amazon 2022
In this day-in-age, it seems as though the influencer’s word reigns supreme over anything else. An endorsement from someone you feel like you know personally due to their Instagram presence can make anyone click a button faster than Jeff Bezos going to outer space. SEE ALSO: Rael’s new acne collection made me realize how much I missed my pimples, not! While it may seem as though the people in our feeds know best, word of mouth has served as the ultimate influencer since the dawn of time.
Very Good Light has a new editorial director, Or Gotham
Hi there, My name is Or. I’m the new editorial director here at Very Good Light. I spent days figuring out what I would write for my inaugural piece. I contemplated sharing my beauty routine before deciding there would be plenty of time for that! I considered plagiarizing Vogue, wholesale, and doing a “24 hours with Me”-style story, but pivoted when I imagined being indicted during my first week at this new role. Rock hard pass. Instead, I come to you today to tell you this: I am nervous as hell.
Being Asian American means you've always been angry
If they don’t see you do you even exist? The insidiousness of erasure is that as an Asian in America, you’re forced to swallow it, digest it, where it calcifies into your bones, weighing your body as it’s pushed overboard, buried into the ocean, your screams silenced as you drown. Being Asian in America feels as if you’re holding your breath waiting for someone to notice, for a hero to come along and save you, perhaps pass you a life jacket or throw you some oxygen.
Very Good Light has moved to a new site
The first time I moved to a new house, my family huddled together in our living room, sharing two blankets. It was the summer of who knows what year, when the sun was a little less hot and the seasons were equally sparsed out. We purged all of our furniture from the small condo we lived in on the second floor of a small complex with other immigrant families. This house, in comparison, felt like a mansion.
Editor's Picks
We likey. While I suppose it could, it should not surprise you that the Very Good Light editors come across a lot of products. Every month, we’ll sort through our bathroom counters and makeup bags to find the ones that stand out the most. They will be cataloged here, in no particular order. On occasion, our picks will be associated with affiliate links, of which we receive a small percentage. This fact bears no relationship to our independent editorial selections! It merely helps keep the lights on.

The problem with male celebrity beauty brands
I believe that beauty should be a democracy – open and accessible for all. So why is my gut reaction to all these new beauty brands from male celebrities so… displeased? Is it simply celebrity beauty brand fatigue? Or could it be my own internalized misandry (the asymmetrical counterpart of misogyny)? In the past month, we’ve seen the launch of Harry Styles’ beauty brand, Pleasing, and Machine Gun Kelly’s UN/DN LAQR, a brand of nail color.
Regé-Jean Page used all of these beauty products for the 2021 Emmys
“Bridgerton” fans were waiting with bated breath as Regé-Jean Page made his way on Sunday’s Emmys red carpet. And they weren’t disappointed with the 31-year old actor sporting a custom-made Giorgio Armani suit. Looking like what we hope will be the next James Bond (the actor is said to be in contention to be the next 007!), with a silk jacquard double-breasted evening jacket with a modified shawl, Regé-Jean looked every bit the leading man.
How K-Pop Empowered Men Everywhere to Embrace Make-Up
Today, South Korean men purchase 20% of the world's beauty products—but that wasn't always the case. It took the K-pop revolution to change South Korean masculinity forever. When BTS won the Billboard Music Award for Top Social Artist in 2017, they did more than just crash the internet. Little did they know, they were waging a war against Western standards of masculinity.
